And whoever gave you the bolded information above is correct. This can happen for a single or combination of reasons, too numerous to go into, but the short of it is...if the blood is darker or black it's indicative of an upper or medial GI problem (anything from severely bleeding ulcer to an intestinal lesion). But if it's uncontaminated/bright then its origin is much closer to the rectum and likely an irritant or the start of a hemorrhoid. Since you fall into the latter category give it two days to clear up in hopes that it's the former. If it becomes painful or persists visit your physician and let him probe your rectum/colon. In the mean time wipe gently and don't use anything on it, especially Vaseline, for some reason people think it helps, but any lip user can attest, it goes on greasy only to later dry out the skin.
