    Basic question

I'm not sure if I'm on a site that can be of help to me. I have custody of my nephew, due to his mother (ex sister-in-law) making bad choices. While he was on a visit with her last week, she gave him an albuterol breathing treatment through a nebulizer. He does not have asthma, nor does he take any type of breathing medicine. I was told albuterol is a steroid. I am uneducated when it comes to this medicine. Is it harmful to a 13 year old boy to be given this treatment (x2) when he doesn't need it? I have asked the mother why she did this, her answer, she said the child said his chest was hurting, so she treated him twice with someone else's medicine. He said after the first treatment he had severe shoulder and chest pain and had trouble breathing, in addition to having a bad taste in his mouth. I have taken him to his doctor and his breathing sounds normal, however I would like to get my questions answered regarding this medicine. He also has a heart murmur which is watched and monitored by his doctor. I apologize in advance for wasting anyones time if this isn't a site that can help. However if there is someone who can help, please feel free to enlighten me to the risks of this medicine. [/COLOR]

That is a controlled substance and a precription only medecine. It is NOT an OTC cough syrup. The reason because it is a powerful drug with side effects and should only be taken under the monitoring of a physician. What she is doing it wrong. His chest pains are a sign of a possible side effect. It has strong effects related with heart and blood pressure What she is doing is dangerous and has made another bad choice.

its always a bad idea to give yourself or someone else someone elses meds. if a doctor hasnt suggested him taking taht then he shouldnt be. speak to your regular physician about this situation and get advice from him. it will be your best choice.
