All that is "controlled" is Kabul and the rest is in the hands of warlords. Under the Taliban regime they controled over 70%. I havent paid much attention in the past 6 months. I assume it's status quo, money spent down the drain. There are staunch similarities between Iraq and Afghanistan, in that: leave and a power vacuum develops. The picture that the media paints is pure horse shit. Well see

Blah, Blah, more bullshit articles decrying the successes in the war on terror. There will always be relatively lawless areas in Afganistan, so what.

Afganistan is where the poppies grow and get sold to fund the terrorists.

pakistan is still a very big problem, the terrorists plant some ied's, blow up a supply truck, then cross back into pakistan where the us forces cant go.

i was impressed with some of the ANA (afghani national army) however its a decent sized country and if we leave im sure the terrorists would have no problem setting up shop somewhere.

also im sure the terrorists are trying and succeding at infiltrating some of the ANA.

who knows, i still have some hope for afghanistan though

The Taliban initially shut down the harvesting of the poppy, then realized it was an excellent source of revenue and began again...

The Afgan gov't will expand it's control over the frontier area as resources grow. And Pakistan is a problem that will eventually have to be dealt with by Afgan, Pakistan and other powers in the region. There is alot of building going on, schools, medical factilities, forward bases to provide security in the frontier. Its not perfect, but as was said earlier, the Taliban come down, blow up some stuff and run back to Pakistan or the Tora Bora area. They will be a minor annoyance for years to come but the country will slowly form into some marginally stable entity.

Please bro what do you live under some rock? Things in NYC have actually never been better. 15 years aog the city was like a war zone. The turnaround has been unbelievable here and is one of the most desirable places to live. Back in the 80's and early 90's you couldnt give apartments away in time square. Now the shit is so expensive.

Why not just let India have their way with Pakistan.......... afterall they really don't like each other, and India has the sheer numbers to do some damage.

I'm curious as to what contributions the middle east has made to mankind (with the exception of the obvious) over the last 50 years besides violence, turmoil, bloodshed, and chaos?

I'd really like to see some innovation and technology come out of their rather than the raping of my wallet so I can drive my car.

Well Israel is a part of the middle east....

Hard for people to be inovative when they suffer under dictators and religious nuts. But the middle east used to be a bastion of science and reason. Somewhere along the way something went damn wrong though.
