question about mexico and drinking water

everyone says dont drink the water, mantazuma's revenge etc...... well im going to an all inclusive resort(secrets excellence) in riveira maya in mexico (south of cancun) and i cant imagine not being able to get a margherita. or drink water with my meals or order a diet coke as the fountain soda is mixed with the local water. ive never stayed in mexico so i dont have any experience with the water. ive been all over the carribean without incident however i understand mexico is a different entity all together. can anyone tell me what they think? i would think that an upscale (4.5star) resort would have the water thing figured no? ill pack immodium and pepto just in case......

Everything they said...used to go 5 to 6 times per year. Even in the shower, keep your mouth shut...brush with bottled water...the alcohol in the mixed drinks seem to kill the bacteria in the melted water from the ice cubes, just don't chew on the ice cubes.

Safest thing to do is drink beer and tequilia.

The water problem is much better now than it was years ago but you still have to be careful! You dont want to be on the bowl on the bubbly all the time you are there!

Water should be OK in up scale resort. To be on safe side take some
(cipro) generic OK. Always take a little first aid kit.

Your right! However, they wash the vegitables in water, the ice is from
their water. Thats the only reason is suggested traveling with antibiotics.
    Just in case of emergency.

PS. I drink bottled water (spring water) in the US. I even give it to my
dogs. Tap water tasts crapy. The plants don't even like it. I have to
    use lake water for plants.

You would think with all the money they make off travel they would upgrade their filtration systems lol. BTW watch out when your in clubs and the shot girls try pouring shots in your mouth because they are watered down.

I actually drank drinks with their icecubes in them and I was fine. I wouldn't recomend this as my friends had problems. I drank bottles water the whole time though.

all water has bacteria in it. in the US we are used to the bacteria in the water so it doesnt bother us. our bodies have built an immunity to it. but you go overseas, mexico, or maybe even canada (not sure about canada) and the water has different bacteria in it. bacteria that your body is not used to. that is what makes you have the shits and throw up. definetly drink bottled water and avoid ice cubes no matter how nice the place is.

Some people are more sensitive to it than others. My friends have gotten sick while i felt nothing, it depends on the person. Some have more strong immune systems and it may not effect them at all. Still be careful!
