Stats have shown violent crime goes up when the population is unarmed, and violent crime goes down when the population is armed. Florida is a great example. As is England and Australia.

The news said they opened fire, they heard about 20 shots go off, and you mean to tell me only one person is dead? Sounds like the guy could have used some target practice if you ask me. But on a serious note, gun control is not the problem in the U.S. I believe the real problem is our liberal, slap on the wrist, ****ed up judicial system. Lets face it, most people who commit crime w/ a gun already have a criminal record 5 pages long, but we havent already put them away due to the prisons being overcrowded already, and our greedy ways of raising state/county income by fining people w/ money so extreme they might as well sit in prison. Where I live the real problem lately is gang violence, we have a bout 5 or 6 different gangs here and it's getting worse lately. They are opening fire on each other in places like movie theatres, the State Fair, sporting events, everywhere and anywhere practically. There has been so much of it lately that as soon as I get the extra money I'm putting in for my handgun permit and getting one myself, and I'm carrying just about everywhere I go. It could be my family at the State Fair who catches stray bullets next time. Statistics show most people who are killed by guns are killed w/ their own handgun, that wont be me. If mine is coming out then it's getting squeezed. Another good little protective device is a stun gun or a cattle prod. My buddy just purchased a 200,000 volt stun gun for $25. He says if you hit someone on the back of the neck w/ it that it could kill them(not sure how true), it takes 2, 9 volt batteries.

Of course it matters... a lot.

The gun this psycho used is a restricted weapon here... what that means is that it's nearly impossible for a civilian to purchase it legally. That implies it was either stolen or smuggled in the country illegally.

No law can control illegal weapons, (just like no law will stop a man from beating his wife), but since the penalties are so harsh for owning one (25 years to life), they are not that easy to buy.

And you are right, gun violence CAN happen... but on a much much much smaller scale per capita than where there is no control at all.

the gun was most likely smuggled in from the US.....i believe that something like 75% of gun crimes commited in canada were from guns that were brought from the United States. Violent gun crimes are far fewer in canada per capita then in the US. Simple statistics dont lie.

I've no doubt the hunting rifle was legal...

The pistol is hard to get, but if you're willing to go thru months of paperwork and investigations you can own a pistol.

The assault rifle on the other hand I'm pretty sure is restricted (ie: only for military and police). Clip holds more than 7 rounds and the barrel is too short (18" minimum if my memory is any good).

If the guns were legal, it's going to really shake up gun control laws here again... as if we needed to make them more restrictive

For me its perfectly reasonable to have strickt weapon laws.

In sweden you can own a weapon if you are in the national home guard, if you have a hunting liscence or if you compete in marksmanship(is this the right word??). But there are very strickt regulations on how you should store and keep the weapon.

Only those in the home guard are allowed to own assult rifles.

I'm afraid you're right there... and no laws on the planet will stop someone from getting an illegal firearm, just as no law on the planet will stop you or me from buying gear.

Whet they hope to do with the law is to reduce the availibility of guns to steal and resell on the black market (and that has worked as now most crime guns are smuggled from the US).

Well, yes and no...

You have to understand what the laws are here. First and foremost, we have no constitutional right to own weapons... firearm ownership is a privilege here.

There is an outright ban on certain types of weapons (handguns and assault weapons). We as a society choose to seriously restrict them.

On the other hand almost anyone can own hunting weapons (I own several myself). All you need to do is to get a firearms licence (which is basically a "screening"), and register the weapons.

The second part to this gun law dictates how you are to store the guns, and thats just common sense (gun safe or trigger lock, and weapon unloaded).

If my house is being robbed, I won't fire off a warning shot... if hearing the action of my 12ga cycle isn't enough for mr badguy to shit his pants, he'll get the shotgun colonestomy. End of story.

I got my 12ga under my bed and 3 shells of #4 in my night table. The gun has a trigger lock on it and the key is with the 3 shells.

Whats starting to worry me though is that apparently this maniac may have bought his restricted gun legally (which is complicated and involves months of paperwork and investigations). If thats the case, something went seriosuly wrong with his screening and some heads are gonna roll.
