Anybody take breaks from their high protein diet?

Just wondered what all your thoughts are on high protein diets and health?

Currently on a (fairly) clean bulk and was concerned that it may be taxing my kidney/liver. I've noticed no symptons, and was looking for more of a discussion to learn from rather than help.

Anybody take breaks from their diet?
Do you believe your body just adapts to it?
Lots of water has to be the best help, any others?

There's something about a lack of responses that makes you feel slightly embarassed!

I dont think this is wise from a BB's standpoint.A norml diet has way less protein and hence the eater hasnt got much muscle mass.

A BB'er on the other hand has alot of muscle mass and its being kept by his large protein intake.

I went to eating one meal a day recently and my muscles shrank and I felt really malnourished but that cleared up as soon as I added a few protein shakes into my day.

high protein diet and links to liver/kidney stress have recently been shown to be flawed, in fact it is now thought by many forward thinking Docs that high pro low carb would actually benefit people with liver and kidney problems.

    What is considered High-Protein?

    1g/lb, 2g/lb, 3g/lb?

I don't take a break from my diet, because I'm not on a "diet".. it's the way I eat on a regular basis, it's considered a healthy lifestyle...
I don't all of a sudden one day decide I'm not going to remain healthy.

    ****in A. Thats gold man...

I dont believe the whole too much protein crap, the only problem is it comes to a fine line between how many cals you need. If you need say 4000 kcals in a day and you are taknig 500g protein well damn you only have half your cals left to split between fat (and even denser macro) and carbs which are very important as well. SO the only limit I ever put on protein is that of one to keep my kcals in perfect order and ratio with the other two important macros.

i think a one day break wont hurt bodybuilders do it all the time when they are bulking they up the carbs and lower the protein and it is good to give your kidney a break and liver consider all that aas we take.

    Called "carb-cycling".
I do it constantly, helps stay lean without the use of cardio on the offseason.

    That's more like it, boys!

I've eaten a minimum of 1.5g/lb for the past 6/7 years. I just feared it was taxing on my liver/kidneys after reading some articles on the subject that got me thinking.

I've always considered it healthy. It's obviously beneficial to muscle growth, but I was concerned it may be heavy going for my organs.

No problem in lowering protein intake. You might even be suprised to notice that it doesnt seem to make much difference to gains if you eat 180 grams or 360.

    Love the question!

I have been on a low carb diet for YEARS. I guess that ists been about 7 years since I started anmd the first 5 were with virtually NO carbs. I was moticvated by my docor telling me that I was obese. Even though I tried to explain that I was reall, "just a tad bit portly," he insisted that I was obese. I started working out the next day and went from 285 to 170 in about a year. I am very tall, 6'5" and people were telling me that I was too thin. I started lifting and over the last few years brought my weight up to about 200(30lbs muscle). All the while I was eating low carb. The high protien facilitates muscle growth.

I eat some carbs now vegies and nuts and cheese but keep them limited and under control. Mostly lots of meat, bacon, eggs, fish.

Now for the health consequences: When I started on my "well balanced diet" I was fat over weight and my bad colesteral was 420. At last test 2 months ago, my bad colesteral was 140. Funny, my diet consists of between 6 and 12 eggs a day and my cholesteral levels are so low- there is something that is "scientifically accepted" that just isnt right, in my opinion. When I feel like being really good now, I limit my calories and after a week or two I can see a really nice washboard emerge. Most of the time I don't sweat it and maybe ingest 50g carb a day.

Anyway, that's my experience with the health consequences of low carb/high protien.

Also, I have NEVER had any of the kidney problems that people all insisted I would get.
