When I was cutting for my first comp. I went heavy up until the last two weeks before the comp.
i have in the past. generally a 12-15 rep range. the biggest thing with cutting is diet and cardio i think. if i'm not mistaken, some bodybuilders train heavy even when on a cut. i think there is a slight safety issue with this.
I recently swtiched things up. I trained using 4-8, now I do 8-12. The pumps are greater and Im prolly exhausting more calories, which is always good when cutting.
