one of my clients was offered a sponsorship with a local up and coming supplement company. The contract basically pays him nothing except free supplements and allows them to use his likeness and such for advertisements or whatever.

Is this normal? I haven't done this type of contract work before, but I would naturally assume if he was being used in print/video he should be paid for it....right?

I would assume so. If he is not getting paid, I would at least make sure I am not bound with them for a long period of time by a contract, so that they can only use my pictures/name for a short period, and then when they get Larger, they would for sure have to pay. How large of a company is it you are talking about?

Fairly small, they don't even have an official website yet. I believe they have one main product out now, which is similar NO2/superpump type stuff.

I'm just trying to figure out what is standard for this kinda stuff, I'd hate to give him bad advice. Figure some of the bro's on here could steer us all in the right direction

Review the contract.

Getting paid in supps is 'normal' for lower level competitors... Supps or a minimal fee.

Check the wording of his contract before he signs up..

Some guys try to rip people off with shitty returns.

The guy wants it to be a 2 year contract, but I'd feel safer with a 1 year. My client is just worried about being tied to a no-money contract for too long just in case things take off.

Talked with the guy offering the contract. He wasn't against putting in "performance" clauses as to winning a contest, high usage in ads, etc. which would lead to more compensation.

Anything else I should be looking for? What are some common rip offs?

I'd really look closely at the wording on that paper before even considering it.

That's what I was thinking, and it seems like it wouldn't even be worth signing a contract with this company for ANY extended period of time if they only have ONE product.

If they don't at least cover all costs of competing (entry fees, travel expenses, lodging, some food) then I wouldn't even bother. Especially if their only product is an NO product. That particular sup. isn't really all that necessary for contest prep so he could take it or leave it. Unless they let me work with other companies I would say no.

Maybe I can shed a little light on the situation. He's not a Pro therefore they dont have to pay him. My Boy Railz you all remember him, the 19 year old who took second at the teen nationals in the LH class, well he is now sponsored by Muscle Tech. They send him $500 worth of Supps. every month and tells him as soon as he turn pro he will start getting Money.
In rear cases the will give an amature Money, they have to be sure you are turning pro within a year or so , like Phill Heath, Tom Prince, just to name a few who was making money before turning pro. and these was BIG companies. weider amd Met-rx

This is pretty much right on the money...i have a sposor and that sounds about right, my wife is high level Fitness and Figure National cometitor and same goes for her, lots of free stuff but not much money, untill you are a pro, it's hard to get paid...XXL

I know of a couple ppl who get around 30K/yr from supp companies and they aren't even national yet.

Other national competitors I've heard receive up to 50-60K/yr including other perks. I won't name names but I know one who was recently in a MD mag.

I'm going to shoot for a 1 year contract and then re-negotiate after that. I will also press for all contest-related fees to be paid.

I did a little more research and the company does have other supps. Their website-to-be only lists one product, but they have a full array allegedly.

I also have to go over the no-compete clause with a fine toothed comb.

well if costs of shows are covered and you get a line of free sups not just one. then it's worth it IMO. That alone would save me around 100 a month for sups and 2-300 in competition costs.

I just went over the whole contract. It is for 1 year. The athlete gets a months supply of every product they make each month. He also gets a bunch of their clothing to wear around. If he has to make appearances he gets transportation and lodging as well.

There was nothing in the contract about them paying his competition fees, I am going to try to push for that. They already making preparations to fly him out to the Arnold classic to work their booth.

He was a bit concerned about being stuck in a booth the entire time basically for free...but I guess that's what doing appearances is. Sounds like he's going to sign up.

lol, you know what they pay ppl to work booths at the Arnold.

Most women make around 500-700/day and guys I've heard making 2-400/day. Depends on what company you're working for.

I'd never do it for free, you're talking some long ass days, I went last year and helped at a booth for a few hours and that was enough.

I recently am getting sponsered, but my deal is to help there company bring in more business and in return I get my supps. for free. This is a great first step to getting my name out there. I took 2nd in novice and 3rd in open in light weight at Illinois State and just recently I came in more conditioned and fuller and took 1st in novice light weight and 1st in bantam weight open in Mid-West Ironman this past weekend. Also I will hopefully soon have a testomainal on there web page to get my name futher out there. Next step is Jr. Nationals and then Nationals. So I belive any type of sponsership only leads to bigger and better things.
