I thought I would take a moment and let everyone know my experiences working for an overnight package service and how they handle suspect packages. For some background, I started as a package loader and worked my way up to General Manager of several facilities. I was with them 14 years.
1. Myth - Delivery companies search for packages containing drugs and gear.
Fact: They do not. In fact, they are told not to concern themselves with it. These companies do not like involving the cops or feds on any level for the most part. It is a huge hassle and they simply avoid it. No one is searching or looking. What does happen is that the cops find out who dealers are by their careless behavior and then they will look for packages coming to the individual. This rarely happens - rarely.
2. Myth - A courier will leave a door tag and bust you when you come to pick it up.
Fact: Untrue. Most drivers are under so much pressure to deliver as quickly as possible, they simply knock once, tag and go. Many times, the door tag is filled out before they get to your house! They are heavily pressured to attempt as many packages as they can in 8 hours. So, they are NOT setting you up, they are simply in a hurry because their managers are beating their asses. The courier does not care a bit about what is inside. The only exception is jewerly. Theft of jewerly from drivers and loaders is management's biggest headache.
3. Myth - The package does not say "signature required" so they must be setting me up.
Fact: Unless the package says "Leave at door, No signature required" then they may not leave it. Management is fairly strict about not leaving shit that may be valuable. Since they don't know what is inside, they don't leave it. If your buddy writes "Leave at door, No signature required", they'll leave it 99.9% of the time.
4. Myth - The door tag means I'll be arrested when I pick up my stuff.
Fact: Nope. Waltz in with your door tag and show ID. They'll have you sign and away you go. Again, they simply want you to take the package away. Boxes take up room. They don't want it in their space. In my 14 years, we never set up a controlled delivery like that.
5. Myth - Steroids are a big problem for delivery companies.
Fact: No. In fact, as long as the shipper pays to ship it, they don't care. They want the package revenue. They do not care about being heros.
6. Myth - Delivery companies work very closely with the authorities.
Fact: Only when they must. Typically, the cops get involved when there are big dealers involved. For small, personal use stuff, they don't. I have seen the cops bring in drug sniffiing dogs and walk the packages. They are looking for street drugs, not gear. Anything that remotely looks like medicine is never an issue. The worse thing you can do is conceal stuff in such a way to draw suspicion. For instance, using coffe grounds to throw off a smell or wrapping something in a RiceaRoni box. Use legit packing and bubble pack. Don't concel.
7. Myth - Delivery companies opened my box for no reason and inspected it.
Fact: No. They never open anything unless it is poorly packaged and it opens. I always use a "courier Box" provided by the company. They are solid and hold up to the hard handling a courier company uses. Solid, tough and they won't open. You'll never have an issue. Another trick - type out a nice looking address label and make the box look professional. In all my yearsm the druggies always wrote in poor-ass hand writing and the package reeked of suspicion. Any reliable source will know to be professional and make the box look good. The "Leave at door, No signature required" label should also be typed.
8. Myth - They'll bust me for personal use gear.
Fact: Highly doubful. Again, they simply don't want to mess with you. You are not big enough. Now, if you start a business of dealing, you are risking your freedom and bunghole. Personal use drugs and gear are not worth the time and effort of a sting operation. Besides, if the box is assembled well and labelled professionally, you'll never be spotted - unless again, someone talks about you to the cops. They go for volume not personal use.
To summarize, most people's hesitation is unwarranted. If you use a UPS or FedEx - you are 99.9% likely to have a safe, damage-free delivery if you follow what I have stated above. There are always exceptions, but in my 14 years, we never had a controlled delivery for gear and just a few for cocaine and weed. All of those were fairly obvious as well. Cocaine or weed would be leaking out of the poorly-taped box! Don't deal with dumb ass people who can't ship a good box! Don't use house tape. Use clear, 2 inch, plastic tape like you see at ship-it centers. Don't use water-gum tape - that shit gets dry and opens. Secure your contents with bubble wrap and use a strong, carrier-provided box (Oh yeah, they are FREE too!).
