Expecting first litter!

I have breed my bullmastiffs and my female is due any day now. Could be today or tomorrow or even Saturday, but I'm putting my money on the next day or 2.

So my question is, what should I expect and what do I need to be ready for the new pups?

Here is a list of things and stuff I already have in place:

1) Whelping box
2) Towels
3) Heating Pads
4) Blanket

of course, plan to sell all but one. Which we will keep to add to our family. Then we plan to buy another. So we will have a total of four bullys!

Kool take pics. Hey do me a favor, take pics of the last pup, i wanna see if it's the smallest one or not. I just don't understand why the last puppy born has to be the smallest or one of the small ones.

Still waiting on the second pup and its been almost 3 hours. Will get pics up as soon as I can.

that dont seem normal... they usually just keep coming... not to make you panic, but keep an eye on the moms vitals... those big headed breeds often get stuck... just watch her...

Yeah, I'm a little worried. She is still having contractions and trying to push, but nothing is coming out.

The vet said it could be 2 -3 hours b/w pups. But they should come every 30 mns. I can't call him until 6 am or so. The mother is doing fine right now.

you should look up an emergency number vet just in case... better to be prepared then running around later on... most vets around me have emergency numbers for 24hours... keep us posted... so KOOOOOLLL

Just got the second one out. Another Brindle, Female at 0130. I was reading on the net and I found an article that told me to stick my hand up in the mother and feather her and it caused a contraction and I felt the head and guided it out. I'm a little more relieved.
Whew!!! I LOVE THE INTERNET!!!!

My vet does have a pager and he answered quickly at 1130 when I called. He said to wait until 0630 and if she is still having complications call. I think if the pups are still inside and the mother is calm, its ok.

Still 3 at 0341. I'm getting very sleepy and not sure how many are up there. I my have to just wait till morning to call the vet.

was there an ultra sound done. I have a couple of West Highland Scottish Terriers and we had one of them AI'ed. She had the litter and killed them all she even ate a couple of them. We found out later that she had a massive calcium deficiency that caused her to turn on the pups. Was very sad, plus they sell here for two grand a pup. I wasnt home and my wife and her friends had to deal with it.

No, we did not have a ultrasound done before, but I am getting one the day after. The vet said he had a litter of Mastiffs come in and they found 2 more pups in the ultra-sound. They also give pitocin to help her push out any placentas that may still be in there.

WOW, WOW! Yeah, I read that calcium is a major supplement for the bitches. I read that you can give them tums about the 5th day after the birth. We were giving her vitamin treats during the latter part of her pregnancy. I guess if you give it too early, its bad to. My first litter, but I'm learning a lot REAL QUICK!!

Some calcium reading

Pre-Eclampsia/Eclampsia (which normally can happen 10 days after whelping, can also happen with a large litter, and more in toy breeds in the last few days of pregnancy. Hypocalcimic shaking & pre-labor shaking can seem the same at first), but if Dam is hypocalcimic, and gets eclampsia, the shaking quickly turns to Convulsions, muscle weakness, muscle tremors, spasms, rigidy and twitching needing immediate Vet assistance before seizures, coma and death. It is wise to give your Dam calcium when pups are 5 days old, (for the next few weeks. The easiest way is one Tum a day. Tums are a great calcium supplement. Eclampsia (sometimes referred to as Milk Fever) is a very serious condition, and can come on suddenly. It is caused from a shortage of Calcium in the Bloodstream.

Uterine Inertia can happen also with a large litter or large pups. She will fail with weak attempts to deliver the pups. She may not even show contractions as her uterus is too stretched. The biggest cause of this, is from too much calcium, in the diet, while pregnant. it is they way to mess up a breeding. NOW, I limit calcium at pregnancy stage, and give it at labor stage, and my deliveries are noticeably better, and less c-sections.

I think this is her last pup. This is the number I was planning on. I got maybe an hour of sleep total. Now the fun begins!

Total of 7, 3 Males and a female.

I believe that mom just finished up at 0749, which would have put her in labor for over 7 hours. She did a GREAT job. My wife had to come in for the last 1 0r 2 pups, while I tried to get some shut-eye. But of course she woke me up at the littlest movement from pup or mom.

Yeah, it doesn't measure up to the birth of your kids, but its close. You are more involved with the pups. Having to help the mom birth, break the sacs, and stay up all night to look after 8 BABIE!!!! Yeah, we are selling 7 of the pups and keeping one.
