Deadlifting from a rack is a decent movement which targets only the back. It takes the leg work out that you would normally have with floor deads. In fact i am giving them a try this friday. But the bar shouldn't be above the knee like that.

Should look more like this. Same straight back but the bar should either be right below the knee or at it.

IDK, I mean the whole exercise is what makes it an exercise... taking bits and pieces will work something I suppose, but it is kind of like if you were shoulder pressing and then just moved the straight bar only to the top of your head...in theory you would work something... but modifying it takes away from the exercise.... Deads to me are one of core exercises.

    Your example doesn't make sense.

What would make sense is the squat : Full squats (hitting more muscle) VS parallel squats.
They are both good movements and both have their place in a routine IMO.

Again i never tried them so ill see how i feel. If i don't like them ill just move on.

well actually it makes sense in the fact that it is half the range of motion of the original exercise... The difference in parrallel and full squat is minute and the exercise as a whole is not changed...

the hardest part of deadlifting is the initial burst that takes the most energy and muscle recruitment... Not dogging on you or saying it is pointless... people do it for a reason, but it just seems like a lazy exercise to avoid the hardest part of the exercise...

their called rack deadlifts.....usually, their done at knee level.....its a variation of the deadlift....us intensemuscle.com members do it all the time.....its a huge mass builder that gets the lower back, traps, rear delts, overall back, lats jacked.

this guy is doing them a tad high, but honestly, who hear can pick up and hold 6 plates without raps? because I can deadlift 500 fl\or 4 from the ground with straps, and I cannot pick up 405 without straps on.

They're on to something here. If you reduce the range of the rep by like 75% you can do more weight...interesting.

umm thats the movement. If you keep going lower you start recruiting the leg muscles. Remember this is the target just the back.

you do partial movements to increase that part of the lift, ever heard of powerlifters doing board presses? you do them and it works out that part of the lift. 3 or 4 board works out the triceps and thats what your using a lot at the top of the bench press for your lockout

This is a PowerLifting technique to help build strength for deads…. Smokeyd is right in his comparison to board presses… The idea is find wherever the sticking point is then train heavy from there. For many PLers getting the weight off the ground is not the problem but getting that weight up to lock the back out so that it’s straight can be difficult so hence forth the rack DLs.

Also because the movement is so limited you can go beyond your max effort and get a feel for heavier weight.

However, I have read on many posts that BBers tend to stay away from DLs because it has been reported to increase waist size and the V shape is valued in the BB community. But I don’t think you can go wrong with deads because it is a big movement it is great on the back for increasing mass.

    Just my 2 cents…

ok, ok, I stand corrected and learned something.... I understand its use....maybe I should give it a shot instead of making fun of it... I am all about paradigms when it comes to lifting.

There is nothing wrong with going knee level either. Remember you are eliminating legs from this movement. The further you go down the more the legs are going to become involved.
