The word is to do a cycle of two weeks on and 2 weeks off, but I'm still concerned about safety. Would it be safer to use if I did 1 week on followed by 3 weeks off?

Taking a dose immediately before working out is unwise, that much I figured out for myself. When do you take it in relation to your workout time, meaning do you have to avoid taking it within 4 hours before or after your workout or something like that?
