Looking to spend around $1,500 - $2,000.
What year, make, and model should I be looking at?
A couple that jump to mind are ninja 500/600, katana 600/750, and gsxr 600/750.... then again, I don't know crap about bikes.

dont get anything smaller then a 600 you will hate it. or a katana (can o tuna)
hmmmm i still have my first bike. its a 2004 kawi 500r. i tore into a the engine a bit and changed the rear shock. it keeps up with the 600s. i can go into corners faster than pretty much any bike on the street but i get my butt handed to me by liter bikes in the straights (1000cc and above).
you can buy a bike like mine for about your price range. i didn't spend more than $300 on my shock and tuning my engine. this bike is bullet proof. it has never failed me as a daily driver (and i track the little SOB occationally). gas mileage kicks ass. i don't think you're gonna find a 600 or above that has the characteristics that i listed above. the kawa 500 is a helluva deal.
i thought about trading in for a bigger bike a couple of times but im in love with the little 500. there's no way i can get rid of it even if i get another street bike. anyone who's been on my bike thinks its a fvcken blast.
if you end up buyin in on a kawi 500 i can give you directions on how to get it pretty fast for almost free. AWSOME STARTER BIKE.
At that price I can't imagine you'll find much besides well-worn ninja 250's. Hold out for at least a decent 500. 250's aren't bad, but you outgrow it so fast it's barely worth it.
600cc or higher, a GSXR dime a dozen, you can grab one at a good price.
Go no bigger than a 600cc. I learned on a Honda F2 600, awesome starter bike. That's been my only Honda. All I buy now is Suzuki GSXR's.
I always tell everyone to go small to learn, then go big for life. and my 2 cents? forget the jap crap. get yourself an american V Twin for cruising. The chics dig it waaay better.... which spells.... Y O U G E T M O R E P U S S Y !!!
Found a 97 Katana 600 for $2500...... def a starter bike.

Not saying you bike is bad. But there is no way you are keeping up with those other bike if they other riders know how to ride.
Even if you tweaked your motor. it was stock at 54 hp. It would take some decent work not tuning to get it to 75hp. All the normal 600's are over 100hp stock. And you are saying only the 1000's can pull on you.
Also as far as going into corners. Your 500 even with an upgraded shock. Doesnt have the same brakes, tires and suspension set up to keep up.
Either your a very good rider. The other guys cant ride to save thier life. or its BS
yeah I started to bring that up earlier. my buddy's wife has one, and the 500 is a good entry-level sport looking bike. the side by side twin cylinder engine is built for reliability and low maintenance, but it wouldn't run with an R6 or gixxer 600 if you strapped rockets to it.
as for the original question, a newer 600 that was softly laid down might be within the price range, just have a shop check it out to make sure it's straight and true with cosmetic damage only.
Any Honda CBR 600 F4i.
These are fantastic starter bikes (Note - I am biased, however I doubt anyone would argue with me).
Great power / throttle response / solid seat position and can be had at very good deals.
I'll sell you a 2007 Yamaha YZF-R6 that's track'd out but also drivable on the street for $5,500. It's got a lot of mods done to it.
I have an sv650 and I like it. I dont have any bikes to compare it too, but its easy to ride and fast enough for me. I would like to get a 1000cc sport bike in the future though.
Honda superhawk vtr1ooo he he
Nah you'll kill yourself. But it would be fun. MONSTER torque. Sounds like an exotic harley on steriods lol. Wheelies in 3rd on throttle at low rpms.
i was just explaining the 500 in terms of a quality starter bike. if the man wants a monster then his price range is gonna have to go up. but for a starter bike the 500 is awesome because of the price and the potential performance.
yeah i race more than the average dude and work on bikes often. and for sure, i have a set of slicks for track days only. but even on stock rubber the 500 handles much better than the bigger bikes.
this dudes bike looks like it performs close to what mine is like on the track. watch how much hotter he can go into corners than the bigger bikes. fun video

Thanks for the responses.

the first link looks like a great deal
Also make sure you get a title with the bike and never buy a salvaged title.
Skip the 500, you'd regret it. The sv650 is fun. Good track bike.
That first link just seems too good to be true. lol. Whats up with that?
Since I don't know jack, Im getting a friend to go and check it out with me.
Doesn't give much of a description. Should I be asking certain questions or looking for certain things?
