most of the rem. barrels are threaded for choke tubes most the 870's come with improved cylinder choke tube threaded in already. 1100's too for that matter

Forget the Remingtons....The 870 is an ok model....However, the Mossberg 500 is way more versatile, more reliable, and in my opinion a better buy, and a better price point. The Mossberg 500 has more accessories for it than any other shotgun, it is like the AR-15 of the shotgun world. Mossberg offers what it calls its "Accu-Choke Barrels" which allow you to change between a variety of chokes simply by unscrewing the 1-2"2 at the end of the barrel. Just be aware you will not be able ot shoot slugs through a choked barrel. You can shoot rifled slugs through a smoothbore barrel, or you can shoot Sabot rounds through a rifled slug barrel, but there is a distinct difference. A smoothbore barrel offers the most versatility, as you can buy "rifled slugs" which basically means the slug ITSELF has rifling on it. This is not however, as accurate as a rifled shotgun barrel. However, that being said, if you buy any of the 500 series platforms, the 500, 590, etc, the barrels for Mossbergs are very affordable at websites like CheaperThanDirt.com, one of the best websites for accessories.

agreed the 500 has a huge aftermarket following. 870 or the 500 about the same though respectively. automatics, benelli hands down. or 1100's

basically im trying to stay away from "grandpa" guns. i like tactical looking shotguns but i wanna hunt cute rabbits so was trying to find a somewhat cool looking shotgun but one that would accept choke for rabbits and hopefully birds.
i just cant believe the people for the website have not answered my question.

get a saiga then its a box magazine fed kalishnikov 12ga you can lay down a couple limit of rabbitts with a 20round magazine.

the saiga's are still fairly cheap and look wicked as all hell

I have an 870 express youth model from when i was little lol, then a Browning Silver Hunter that thing is a beast and looks fancy too haha. But I really want one of the Mossberg 500 tactical shotguns. They can hold so many shells and be modified and everything. Looks like a pretty bad gun if I may say so myself.

A lot of these shorter barreled "tactical" shotguns have no provision for a choke. It's just cylinder bore all the way (that means smooth bore, same diameter, no place for a choke). You'd have to change out the barrel to expand it's role effectively. Really, who goes duck hunting or skeet shooting with an 18" barrel anyway?

While I am a Remington 870 guy, Mossbergs don't suck. A while back at the sporting goods store I saw Mossberg was offering the 500 with 2 barrels, one 18" "tactical" and one 24" choked, for less than a comparable 870 with one barrel. The barrels are easily swapped, and on the longer barrel the chokes could be swapped in and out as desired. If that deal is still around that's what I'd recommend. It'd be great for bunnies and bad guys.

I personally have an 870 tactical with 8-shot capacity, 20" cylinder bore barrel, and a Hogue pistol grip. It's short enough to use in somewhat tighter spaces, so good for home defense. The much-maligned pistol grip is a pleasure to shoot, but with ranges and space beyond the home defense role I'd want a full stock.
