On a scale of 1-10....10 being perfect. What is your first impression.

you will trip when i tell you slimmer, how tight the security is for me. think presidential secret service and you are close.

we have two secure compounds seperated by a public road (unsecure). as i get ready to travel from one compound (residential) to the other (office), there are three AK-47 toting gate guards. As I get cllose, they radio ahead to the other guards at the other gate... both gates open simulaneously, one gaurd from each gate steps out onto the open road, once the all clear is given, i can cross.

we went out to dinner last night. the resturant was in another secure compound. so as the armour plated toyota reaches the destination, the body guard jumps out, opens my door for me, and then we start the process of entering the compound. we enter (all of us) enter a set of dead mans doors.... the door to the next room cannot be opened until the entrance door is fully closed. once inside, a sliding metal speak easy door is opened and we are showing our identities. we actually have to give them our ID, cept i forgot mine and was let in somehow, once inside, we are frisked for weapons, complete with all the customary jokes... "oh baby" or "that's not a pickle in my pocket" kind of stuff. the resturant actually serves beer and wine, and there is some night life activity come to find out. There is also a place called "the pub" where guys and gals can get together. since no locals allowed, all expats. and check this out.... there was actually some women there! ok, just two, but not bad looking.

i'm beginning to realize that the afghan people are one of the heartiest on the planet, and endure hardships you and I can't even imagine. It's freezing cold outside right now, and i'm inside a nice warm room typing this BS, and those dudes are outside in the cold all night, with only a little electric heater in the guard shack when they get to go inside. but you approach one of them, and they are enthuiastic with their greetings to you, and love to shake hands. Part of my job is PR, and i have to remind myself to always great them happily and don't hold back on the praise.... I think the gate guards make something like $120usd month? I may be wrong, but not by much.... maybe 180 tops.
