*********DISCLAIMER - as much as I will try to keep it simple, it may get lengthy***************
The very stripped down version of the story is this: A plane crashes on a seemingly deserted island. Most of the people survive, and soon realize this is no ordinary island. A man who was in a wheelchair realizes he can walk for instance. They come across strange things, like a polar bear - kind of strange on a tropical island. Many many other things that make this place really mysterious. The first season dealt mostly with this mysterious island and a ton of character development.
In the 2nd season, they find a 'hatch' in the ground which turns out to be a scientific research station. Turns out there are many of these all over the island, and back in the 70's there was a research group there supposedly studying and experimenting with the unique properties of the island, specifically electro-magnetism. I found this season really interesting, and it started a whole theory on time travel.
I'm not going to keep breaking it down season by season, because honestly season 3 and beyond gets REALLY complicated IMO. Also, i'm realizing that i'm not doing the show any justice with my gimpy description above. Some of the central themes the show deals with:
Faith vs. Science - One man 'knows' they are there for a reason, they have a purpose in being there. Another man feels there are perfectly logical explanations for everything that is happening to them
Freewill vs. fate - with the whole 'time travel' theory, can going back in time and doing something different have any bearing on the future which has actually already happened?
Good vs. Evil - to me, the show was very religious but not any specific religion. I thought they did it in a very cool way too, in the series finale they had a scene in a church with stained glass which would make you think it's a Christian/Catholic reference, but if you look at the symbols on the stained glass they were of many different religions. The show was great at throwing in the subtle hints and clues all over the place. I guarantee everytime you rewatch an episode, you'll see something you didn't notice the first time.
In the end, the show was very much about these people and their lives. It was brilliantly done and you really really did feel like you knew and cared about these people... it's crazy! It really is the best show i've ever watched.
Flagg, i'm probably butchering the sh!t outta this, help me out!
