To much Protein _ Kidney problems??

    Educate me on the possibilities.
Somebody commented about all my protien intake today and I had never heard of this.
Can to much protein cause kidney problems for someone with healthy kidneys?
What types of protein - Does it matter?
    How much is to much?
    etc...
    etc...
Tell me what you know guys and gals

Ok, i just had this problem actually. I have had 3-4 Kidney Stones in the last 3 months.

Doc and specialist says its not the protein. For me my body wasnt liking the creatine i was taking for one. It elevated my creaktine CPK (spelling) levels serverly which ended up dehydrating my kidneys too. I have been urinated some blood off and on from the start of it.

For me it was later found out it had to do a lot with my genetics. Father had a bunch around this time when he was my age.

But from the doc's ive seen they said no protein doesnt effect the kidneys.....liver on the other hand though.

For the OP - protein overdosing although theoretically is possible, in practicality it's not too plausible for the average person. If you were taking in too much protein, more than likely it wouldn't be absorbed and just filtered out when you use the washroom. The only scenario I could think of that would cause kidney complications is if you were already pre-disposed to kidney problems or if you were really stupid and had a protein+creatine only diet with little water consumption. However, in the aforementioned you would run into many other problems before kidney failure.

    For Goode:

Creatine breaks down into Creatinine. I've talked to my Urologist about this and upwards of 10g/day is not sufficient to give kidney nor liver problems. Even in my case where I have a severe renal condition my creatinine levels are still normal (proved via several blood work). You can try to increase water intake by a few litres/day but you shouldn't be having problems. The only ingredient in your creatine powder should be : Creatine Monohydrate.

Overrated info, nothing to worry about here. I've done my research since i'm about to have a kid who seems to be developing only one kidney. Ridiculous amounts of protein (don't ask me for a number atm) could cause kidney damage over time; Reasonable amounts (even bodybuilder quantities) should be no reason for concern, ESPECIALLY in people with 2 healthy kidneys.

From what i've read the kidneys are only clocked running at about 75% percent

If you were to loose one of your kidneys would take 100% of the load and it might put the kidney under strain in the long term

@gbrice; I wish your kid the best of health

Thanks bro. I posted about it a while back but did so in the lounge. Couldn't really think of a more appropriate place and really didn't wanna use my log for that kind of thing.

I appreciate your thoughts and prayers in any event. We actually have an ultrasound appt. tomorrow - at this point we're just monitoring the good kidney to ensure it's doing it's job efficiently. So far, so good, and less than 3 months left!

Most of the protein/ kidney health issues arise in somebody like a long term diabetic with ESRD, and they are on very very strict protein restictions.( like 50g/day)

You have evidence that you can post that protein affects the liver negatively, right?
