If you send a package with contents that are illegal to have in the country you live in and get seized, does the package get ending up thrown away or does it go back to the country of origin where it happens to be legal?

It gets seized by customs and destroyed.

It depends. If it is something they are unsure about, it may get returned. If they are certain that it is contraband, it will be destroyed (or kept as evidence).
