Roman is shopping for a gym.....

Well mates, i'm back stateside, and i've let the lifting slip a little bit. I think I'll transition from the gym in my back yard to a traditional gym with all the bells and whistles. My son's gym membership is up for renewal, so we both decided to do a little shopping around and find us the best gym in town. Unfortunately, we live in a small town with only 68k people, and only three gyms in town that I'm aware of.

    1) In Shape
    2) California Total Fitness
    3) 24 Hour Fitness

In Shape is the most "expensive" and required an annual membership when my woman and daughter signed up. So my son and I decided to try there first, as it is only 3 miles from the house.

(Keep in mind, my whole life, I've always had my gym equipment at the house, and worked out solo)

My son and I walk into In Shape and are greated by a youthful, energetic sales pitch when I mentioned i wanted a visitors pass. I got the pass, and had to cut the guy off when he started into his sales speech about the benefits of prepaying a year in advance (remember, good chance of my going to pakistan in october). We walk in and there are two main rooms. to the right is primarily a room filled with rows and rows of cardio machines, with a few iso machines thrown in for good measure. After runnning on the treadmill for about 5 minutes (dam! i brought my denim shorts and they kept trying to fall down!!) i did a few light reps on some of the basic movements i felt i would be doing. i did notice that there were two squat machines, one was a inverted leg press, the other a modified squat with the weight pads on the shoulders and verticle was 45% off center. each machine was monopolized by a group of kids that looked like they were just fukking around, so we went in the other room.

And guess what? more iso machines. there was a single bench employing free weights, which was being used. dumbells on the far wall. so we did some dumbell presses, and then waited for the bench to open up. Here's the thing though. the place was more or less empty, as we went during an off time. but the machines most important to me, the inverted leg press, the free weight bench press (and there was no free weight area for deads, only a machine) were being used. imagine how long it would take waiting in line if the place were busy?

So we said "Good bye" to In Shape. My son said he didn't think we'd like the place, since serious weight lifters don't usually go there, but it was worth a try. And it would have been cool since so close to the house.

In shape also had an indoor pool, which i didn't bother to inspect, since i wouldn't go there to swim. it also has various types of aerobic classes, which seems to be more inlined with the target clientele.

    One down... two to go

24 hour fitness's vary alot. Some are "sport clubs" and other labels. The one closest to me has alot of free weights and machines but everything is old. The locker room is a dump. But i can drive 20 mins and another 24 hours is top of the line and spot less.

we were doing some dumbell presses, and at full extension from a 45% sitting position, the base got real wobbly which ended the set/routine.

and 50% of the people exercising looked like seniors in high school. no issues with that. but one guy was doing some preacher curls with a barbell, and at the end of his set, just drops the bar, or almost throws it, and it rolls for about 8 feet before it stopped. noisy as shit. and on the leg press, the whole group of em were taking turns. I'm glad they were not ignoring legs, someone must have educated them? so finally, i ask them how much longer, and then some 18ish looking bloke hops on, after i thought he did his final set? guess i was wrong?

I did like the calf raises. before, with my other machine i purchased for afghanistan, i'd have to do single leg calf exercises, at full incline, and at full banding, and even with a 20kg plate on my chest, I'd have to do almost 60 reps to max the burn. but on this machine, i could add as much weight and start burning at a much lower rep. probably a pretty typical machine, but already i can see the advantages and gain potential for going it in a gym.

I've shrunk up a bit over the last two months. still vascular. and after doing some reps, i got a pretty decent pump. very noticeable difference. son notices too. At some point, he may be able to outperform, since he has a much larger frame. But i told him give me a month and a half to get back into it, and i'll be kicking his ass. (I better be able to friggin deliver!!!!)

I don't understand why some people feel the need to bring 50 people to the gym to work out. Unless they are going to end it with a huge circle jerk on a cookie and draw straws for who has to eat it I dont fukkn get it.

no need. if i want to fart in public, then i will do so with relish

btw... i've got my son with me, he'll keep me in line.

and btw x2... you'd be surprised what a small variety of equipment (free weights) can do if used diligently over a period of years.

I workout at 24 hour. They seem to be in most of the cities I travel around to. As Gix stated, they vary from place to place, but overall, I've had good luck with them.

    I know.
Bought a "half cage" with some free weights, and it was my gym for about 10 years.
Had it outside in FL in the backyard next to pool and palmtrees. Loved it.
Put on some mass with that thing....or it might have been the Androdestione that was sold freely at GNC back then....

The nice thing about 24 hr fitness is, it's 24hr and you can go at time other people dont if you decide you dont want a crowd. I love the fact I get to go at 3am when no one is there so if I make a little noise no one looks at me funny and I go at my own pace.

Awe TR just go for it and splurge for a contract with Golds Venice Beach. That way you can keep us all posted up to date with all the celebs workouts out there like Stallone, Hugh Jackman, Brad Pitt, Arnold The Schwarz. And imagine how it would boost the ole ego kissing all their er um rubbing shoulders with the likes of them. Your head would be so high in the clouds youd hear Whitney singing from Heaven. And you could give us all the details as to all their secret cycles and sources for the stars. It's a win win win...

Had you considered fitness first? I belong there and although they do not have all the bells and whistles of the high end clubs, they allow you to join at any club and work out at any club with no penalty. I think my yearly pay by the month membership works out to like $35 a month (24.95 a month plus $100 initiation and other fees total the $35 monthly) . What I did was to join at the cheapest location I could find but I always work out at the two near my house.

The location vary a lot in clientel and equipment the one in Bethesda MD is a meat market cardio type gym but they still have a good amount of free wieghts and machines, the Rockville MD location has probably 20-30 or more serious lifters at least 10 of whom appear to be juicing at any given time.

The other thing is just for grins I googled fitness first Pakistan and found a website claiming the plan to open 21 in Pakistan in the next year.

Gotta love that Andro. few years back, i hit 245 from lifting for 4 years. Used andro the last 2 or three years. didn't know about pct or cycling, just used it ed. crazy strength gains too. one hand clean and jerk with 100lbs (on a barbell, not a dumbell). not a terrible amount of weight, but just keeping that thing balanced and under control requires alot of strength too.

So you've used andro. careful mate, yer starting to date yourself, since half these kids probably never heard of it before?
