    Instant Oatmeal vs. Steel Cut

Is there a noticeable nutritional difference between instant oatmeal vs. steel cut? I'm not referring to the prepackaged/sugary garbage, just the giant tub of unflavored instant oatmeal. I'm assuming the difference is that it's probably precooked? Now, don't just say, the steel cut is better, if you think so, tell me why. I don't care about flavor, it's just much quicker and easier to make the instant, vs boiling the other stuff for forever. I know this may be splitting hairs, but if I'm gonna try to eat as much of the stuff as you guys seem to be recommending, I wanna make sure I'm doing it right. I don't know that I have time to boil the steel cut stuff everyday, but I can go into work and use the coffee machine to put hot water into the instant and eat it right away.

Also, would adding wheat germ to oatmeal in the morning be a good idea? I've always heard the wheat germ is super-nutritious, but it sounds like eating to body build is different and you're more concerned about things like insulan spikes and gly***ic levels and stuff. Everyone bashes wheat because some people are allergic to glutin, but I thought wheat germ was really good. Any thoughts?

There is no nutritional difference between instant oatmeal and steel cut. The reason why instant oatmeal is cooked instantly is the processing of the oats, they are much thinner and lighter in weight which allows them to be cooked instantly when met with hot water.

Adding wheat germ and/or flax seeds to your oatmeal would be further beneficial from a nutritional perspective IMO.

^^ this. Instant oats have simply had the first phase of digestion (breaking down into smaller pieces via chewing) done via processing. Nutritional value is the same.

Cool, thanks. Why would anyone get the non-instant ones, then?

regular cook just as quickly in the microw wave. 3 minutes on high and good to go. takes almost as long to boil the water to make instant.

I use instant oats raw in my shake because there's less chewing. I actually prefer whole oats when I eat proper oatmeal, i.e. cooked, etc. Much more of a meal IMO.

I agree, a shake with 100g oats isn't satisfying at all

But mix up some protein in water and use this with 100g oats for porridge and its very filling, and tasty

Haven't eaten cooked oats for quite a while now. Just drink it straight with water or a little bit of skim milk.

No need to taste that garbage longer than I have to.
