Is there some secret to getting motivated about stuff you dont care (much) about

Theres some kind of disconnect. My old man is one of those up before dawn and working til dusk types even on his off day. He is a get it done type. He doesn't procrastinate he just does it.

I didn't get those qualities. I can do the gym thing because I truly love it and enjoy being there (wierd - something most people find a big pain in the ass yet I can totally get into). I truly do care about the gym because I see the rewards coming from it. I see where it takes me and the doors it opens for me in life and in my mind and body. I am one of those people who can have a conversation about bicep curls and its not boring. In fact I find it interesting to hear one guy's philosophy - does he believe in heavy overload with cheating like Arnie's barbell curls? Does he believe in light weight strong contraction and slow negative? Does he like drop sets or rest pause sets? Totally exciting for me.

Everything else in life I am a slow to get started procrastinator who tends to hate every moment he's doing whatever if it resembles work. I want to be better. I want to be a better person with better work ethic about other things even if its just keeping the house tidy or the important things in life like looking for work. In short I want to change. I can't be the only person whos had to put real effort into changing in this way can you guys give me some advice even if its just tough love? I know I can't be the only person struggling with this.

Well takes about 21 days to build an habit. So start with one simple one, then add another, and another one...

The trick is to have structure in your life. For instance, for chores, I have this board in my house that puts 2 chores a day for each day of the week. Things like:

- Tidy up entrance (You know how 50 pairs of shoes just kinda pile up there? Although in the states you guys don't take your shoes off in your house... That's kinda weird)
- Tidy up living room
- Tidy up bedroom
- Do the dishes
- Do laundry
- Do washrooms
- Vacuum Carpets
- Mop floors
- Etc.

Some of them are once a weekers (like vacuuming the carpets, cleaning washrooms) and then the tidying up ones happen 2-3x a week. The thing is once your house is clean top to bottom, it's easy to maintain. But once you let it go, you start dreading the giant pile of work ahead of you. This principle is taken to an extreme on the show 'Hoarders'.

You can use the same principles for other areas of your life. The secret is structure and organisation. If you have a set schedule to stick to than it's a breeze.

Im shit at this too but it all about structure for me anyways, not that I have one anymore lol, but I used to and it worked, make a plan and stick to it or just pay people to do it for ya

Looking for work for me comes down to money, when Im broke and no food, cant go out etc then believe me you find the motivation to pull money out of somewhere, either that or become a bum but I dont like the latter so just do what you gota do, find something that you like, who gives fvck what it is but if you hate it then ya wont stick and then back to square one

The first step to overcoming a problem is first admitting that you have one. You have overcome that step now you need to make the next and start correcting it. You already know what you have to do now just do it in baby steps like mentioned above.

good suggestions there rex. although shoes come off at the door to my house, guest or resident! i am very particular about this. i DO NOT like grit or dirt or anything like that on my floors or my bare feet! i do NOT tolerate it!

to take it one step further i have 2 dogs and when they come into the house the have to be carried into the shower where i have a brush and soap to wash their paws and then dry them with a basket of rags on the side of the tub! one of the dogs weighs 90lbs (40.8kg) and even he has to be carried. my wife sometimes carries him and she weighs 125lbs (56.7kg)!!

So true. Only problem is I have been going over and over that 1st step for about 15 years. Part of the ADD I think. Once in a while I start to get it together but even trying to make a chart or organizing things is just to much most of the time. lol What I need is someone to help remind/motivate me..

LOL.. i missed these yesterday. my wife says i need to be on OCD meds LOL.. hey who wants muddy gritty floors from dirty dog paws? is that so far out there no one can relate to this? is it just me? it rains, the ground is wet, dogs run around all day in it and then want to come into the house and walsk on the floors and even worse the carpet and u guys see nothing wrong with just letting them do this day in and day out? to me THAT seems far worse.

ive got it down pretty good. i can do 1 dog in less than 3minutes..

plus i do them one at a time. when i get home from work i follow the same pattern, i come in and put my laptop on the table, put up my keys and money and then go get pennys bowl and then maxs bowl. i then go into the garage and fill them both up. then i set pennys down in the laundry room and take max his bowl on the back porch (they eat separately).

i then bring penny inside and carry her to the bathroom and wash her paws and she runs and eats her food. usually by the time im done with her max has already scarfed his bowl down so i bring him in and carry him into the shower and wash his paws. then he goes into his crate and i turn on the shower and let the hot water heat up and can finally take a shower. after this i then bring my laptop and stuff upstairs ans have an exact procedure i follow to get everything into position.

sometimes i have cooked my dinner after showering and before going upstairs, sometimes not. depends on how hungry i am. once all these things are done i am then able to sit down and eat..

i suppose u would also find it odd that after grilling out i have to take a shower before i eat my food even when we have company LOL.. my wife does not like it and says its rude cuz i bring in hot food to eat and then everyone has to wait for me to go take a shower (lmao as im typing this)..
