7 weeks ago I injured my wrist when using a punchbag, had Xrays that night and the diagnosis was a broken lunate bone. I was put in a cast for a week, and then when I had the cast off, and further Xrays, I was then told by a different doctor that the bone was not broken, however there was suspected ligament rupture. I was then scheduled for an MRI.
I trained sparingly over this period, wrapping and supporting my wrist and only doing exercises that I could complete pain-free, which meant for upper body I was very limited. I wore a splint/support throughout the day and during sleep.
The past 2 weeks I decided to rest the injury completely and stopped wearing the wrist supports/splints, as the pain was not subsiding anywhere near as much as I anticipated. This has helped somewhat, although it still feels a long way off being ready for training.
This morning I was given the MRI results by a third doctor, and was now told that all soft tissues were intact, however the lunate bone was infact broken all along.
Obviously my faith in the doctors to this point is slightly questioned, and am wondering whether to go and get a fourth opinion.
Although I would prefer a broken bone to torn ligaments, I am concerned about the bone healing correctly. Im keenly aware of anatomocal positioning and have made an effort to keep the wrist in a neutral position, but the doc said he would have wanted me in a full cast for 6 weeks. He also said I should wait a further 2 weeks before I resume training, and 4 weeks after that until I get back to wrestling. Its been 7 weeks since the injury and Ive always been told that 6-8 weeks should lead to full recovery, I feel a long way off until it will be ok. Will being misdiagnosed and not wearing the cast for long enough affect my healing?
