Went to the doctor today for my shoulder pain, he did an ultrasound imaging and found a minor degeneration/arthritis. He recommended Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) treatment. Any of you done this and what are your thoughts, does it work, is it worth it?

surprised no one has any info on this! it must not be popular.

this is a part of prolotherapy, this sounds pretty good and they have some research to back them up in regards of ligament injections. I would get them if i could for my knees but its not available. Im going for HGH instead, similar effect. instead of isolating growth factors from my blood and locally injecting like PRP im gonna get the global effect to the body with hgh
http://forums.steroid.com/injuries-r...-had-them.html Heres a thread from a few months ago. I've been told it's good for tendonitis but cannot find consistent steady results that it works from what I've read so far.
That guy was super rough with that long as$ needle
I was going to get it done on my elbow at one point but opted not to. I'm still thinking about getting it some eventually on cycle my tendonitis flares up and is a pain in the aas.
Let me add, I have tried every other imaginable method of management with little to no success.

bass, have you exhausted all other conventional options of treatment? like nsaids and cortisone shots?
might also want to consider getting an MRI for more accurate imaging, compared to the ultrasound.
I tried allot of things and spend $1000s and no results. according to him the ultrasound system he uses is 10 more high resolution than MRI, and probably correct, I was looking at it and it was producing pretty sharp images. my problem is arthritis, there is a small bulge where the tendon rides on, and that's what's causing the pain, not really sure how PRP can fix that, but that's what he recommended. I might give it a shot and this will be my last attempt, and I don't really want to do any surgeries at my age, if it doesn't work then I just have to live with it.
What kind of dr did you go to? I talked to my MD and my ortho and neither of them thought it was a good idea. I'm not crazy about it since insurance doesn't cover it. A retired ortho that I know told me about it and he thinks it can help but he also said 1 set of injections isn't enough to do much and at $900 a pop, ouch! I've managed to keep mine under control by reducing amount of weight when I lift and using the band-it brace. The next time it flares up I'll ask the ortho about the ultrasound imaging for a better look at the problem.
And if you think fore arm tendonitis is bad,I've got it in the ball of my foot. Also known as sesamoiditis. The cortisone injection for that was really fun,but well worth it.
I have a co worker who had it done 3x for the elbow. Minimal results.
Have you guys heard of acupuncture?![]()
Isnt that a form of torture? lol
I tried acupuncture for a while to see if it would help with my back pains and other things. No change and yes I did it for a couple of months, not just once. I even did acupuncture with electrical stimulation.
I'm not saying it does not have it's positive effects and does not help many, it's just not a cure all like most everything.
I actually wanted to do this PRP thing for my knee, but the doc suggested it as a last-resort thing. There are several other procedures up until this one that you could try.
Basically what he said is that they take blood, put in in a centrifugal machine, extract STEM cells(if i'm not mistaken) and then inject it in your joint. He said he has done it to a lot of athletes with 100% success rate.
100% success rate? You need to ask him what he considers 100% success. Success that he injected them or 100% they recovered 100%, 90%, 80% etc. I have heard of nothing that is 100% and anyone who tells me it is I call BS.
My doctor is the head orthopedic surgeon for Seattle Seahawks and Mariners. He also does this but told me the success rate is not even 50/50 but it does seem to help or speed up healing for some people. My co worker who had it done by him got some relief but nothing near 100%
thanks for the info guys, this really helps me make a better decision. to be honest I am skeptical about PRP, especially when they want to charge $900! I think I'll stick with pain killers for now.
There is no stem cells in the blood. Unless he was talking about fetal cord blood, or the bone marrow itself.

PRP is the next level of prolotherapy, i wish we did whole blood first, my upper back is now very solid after 3 treatements when sodium morrhuate stop working and dextrose well was crap.
I also got a labral tear of the hip 15mm small tear no arthrtis i am getting PRP in there too does amazing wonders.
Blood is very powerful if you diet is good you got a lot of good things in your blood to heal.
This is the next gen of healing not like crappy cortisone injection PRP cures
but it hurts like hell hhahaha worst then prolo since blood is pure inflammation
hey Yannick, I remember when you were posting regarding your treatment. thanks for the input and glad some of that treatment worked for you.
