    Question The Importance of Protein?

Recently, I was explaining to a friend of mine (a vegetarian) the importance of protein for proper metabolism and muscle growth; building new cells, maintain tissues etc...

After my pro-protein rant, she said "the largest and strongest animals in the world are those which eat no flesh food of any kind like the elephant and the rhinoceros".

That stumped me. How do large animals such a the elephant, rhino, horses, cows, etc gain such muscularity with very little complete protein?

I remember (vaguely) reading about this once, and if memory serves me correctly they can actually synthesize different amino acids in their body from the aminos in plants. They don't have as many essential aminos as we do. We HAVE to get the essentials from them, where as they don't. Wired differently. Comparing apples to oranges

Also vegetarians can get complete protein sources from things like soybean, just other health implications that go along with it.

It's a Belgian Blue, get where they got there name from? (not the cow) double muscled beasties I can imagine Marcus having one as a pet.

You're right on the cows differing digestion. Plus they eat ALOT of grass. Young grass is richer in available protein for them. They are also given manufactured feed to assist . I don't suppose a farmed cow used for meat looks ,ugh the same breed pre farming. In fact alot of breeds have been interbred to create what we have today.

Most of this applies to to the other large herbivores, they eat an insane amount of food. An elephant can eat up to 300kg (660lb) of vegetation in one day.
