    225lb people bulk

So im 225 at 5'11 with prob 16%-17% bf. I am trying to lean bulk. I am doing 3000 calories, but after a few weeks I still dont think this is enough. Last time I did 4200 calories and I got fat and looked bloated, etc. I just bumped it to 3200 cals. What was the sweet spot you grew on steady? Should I try 3200 cals or bump it up higher. I need to grow on this cycle.

I know this doesn't answer your question, but at close to 20% bodyfat, the word "bulk" wouldn't be in my vocabulary. Your decision obviously, but I think your BF is at a point where any 'bulk' will yield lackluster results. Just my .02

Go and get your body fat checked, I am quite certain you are in for a surprise, IMHO.

    Thanks

As of right now I weight about 229 pounds, but I am cutting at 3100 calories a day. The truth is that it is much easier to cut than it is to bulk for us big guys. Especially when we are at a higher body fat percentage. My suggestion to you is to cut down to around 10-12% body fat. Based on your current stats, that would be around 209 pounds. Keep in mind that you could lose a little muscle mass as well while cutting, so reaching 10% might mean that you have to go down to around 200-205 pounds.

At that point you should do what is known as reverse dieting. Essentially what it consists of is adding 100-200 calories per week to your current daily calorie consumption. So if you were cutting on 2700 calories/day, the next week you eat 2800 calories/day, the week after you eat 2900 calories/day, and so on until you reach the point where your calorie intake has you gaining no more than 1 pound of body weight per week. That is how you find the sweet spot, and yes it takes patience, but it works, and it helps minimize fat gain when bulking.

Still, work on getting lean first, then start your bulk. Good luck.

Why do you *need* to cut? You don't need to do anything. Why are we recommending it? Simple. Because you're fat... relatively speaking.

Most of us have tried bulking at a higher BF% at one time or another. Few of us have been happy with the end result - maybe a few more lbs. of muscle, and a lot more fat. Why?

Our bodies tend to partition nutrients more efficiently (in favor of muscle) at lower bodyfat % (~ 12%, depending on the individual). So those who have a higher BF% will have a harder time putting on muscle (like you already stated you're experiencing) and an easier time putting on BF (like you have done), and vice versa for those who are relatively lean.

    Enough of a reason?

What's a People bulk? I recommend lean white meats like birds and fish.
