Can I increase my BMR by eating more?

My friend has confused me by advise he got from a Dietitian. He does a lot of strength and anorobic HIIT training such as GRIT classes. She was telling him that in order to burn fat he has to "eat more" or at least hit his BMR as he has not been doing that, he is way below his calorie intake so he to "eat more to increase his metabolism (BMR). She gave him the analogy of adding coal to the fire. What happens when you add more coal, the fire burns faster.

I was always under the impression you need to eat 200-500 calories below your TDEE. So if he is 22% body fat and 32 years old (natural, he doesn't use steroids), how is eating more going to help him burn fat??

    Maybe I am missing something??

There's a big difference between eating 300-500 calories below your tdee and eating 1000+ calories below your tdee.

Unless one is severely overweight (like Biggest Loser overweight) a large caloric deficit is not favorable.

He should listen too his dietitian.

All dietitians that I've come meet really know their field.

Unlike most personal trainers, where you're lucky if you can find one per gym who is worth a damn.

weight loss can stall when dieting, increasing a set number of calories can help push through that wall.

If you move around a lot, walk and uses stairs etc ... train hard and do cardio and classes then if you have a physical job, you need to match your kcals in vs kcals out. so you can eat more and lose weight, as LBM gets better kcals actually have to go up.

You can easily train 7 days a week with 2-3 double split days start cardio at 40 mins and work up to 3 hours a day and eat till your heart is content. Its about putting in the hard work and things like, job, family, work/life/gym balance.

we never did much cardio in the 70's just train 2-3 hours a day, heart rate is up and you're burning kcals... deficit can come from energy expenditure only. But it comes down to how hard you are going to work. I like cutting on 3500kcals and no elimination diets
