I do my deadlifts with 25lbs plates loaded on the bar instead of 45s. I do it so I get lower and help bring my legs into it more. The last time I did it, a trainer asked me what the hell I was doing. I told him my thinking behind it and he said that I shouldn't do it and should focus on keeping my butt high. I do mine with my back locked in, but butt low so I get a good leg workout too. Full disclosure, I go to a douchey expensive gym (Equinox) so the trainers are hardly the powerlifting experts.
