    Shoulder Injured...am i finished?

I was so looking forward to my summer cycle, but ive had a bad shoulder recently, and i just came back from my consultation with the shoulder surgeon, he said i will no longer be able to bodybuild because of my shoulder laxity and partial tears or rotator cuff.... is this really the end or can i come back from this? thanks guys

Bottom line, the main thing to truly improve (there is no fix unless they tighten the capsule via surgery) a chronic subluxation of the shoulder is to strengthen the rotator cuff as much as possible. If the tears prevent you from strengthening the cuff and surgery is not an option you will be left with unilateral weakness. Given that your problem is with soft tissue however, I'm surprised a surgeon would say that you are finished with bodybuilding. Unfortunately, even with all the literature out today, the majority of MDs (you pick the specialty) are terribly uneducated in the musculoskeletal system as it relates to sports and physical fitness. Try shoulder rotator cuff rehab...for details check the stickies (or is it stickys) and seek another opinion. I can tell you from experience that many times I've heard the statements: "He'll never walk again", "She'll never regain full use of her arm", "He'll never play (insert sport) again" only to find a complete return to that activity. There aren't any absolutes with our bodies...research, experiment, and don't give up hope.

If you are competing in pro-sports or bodybuilding then u need to consult more than one doctor to see if there is hope for using your shoulder like that, but if you are just doing bodybuilding for the love of the sport then u need to slow down, get physical therapy, and then slowly get back into bodybuilding while avoiding exercises that put lots of strain on your shoulder until u feel u are much better and the doctor ok's it!

As for now dont stop other activities, just because your shoudler is hurt doesnt mean u cant train legs! train abs! Keep exercising other parts that dont involve your shoulders because if u stop exercising complelty this injury will have strong phsycological negative effects. I know what its like man, i tore a tendon in my arm and had a knee injury so i couldnt do anything at all for one year, it killed me mentally i was dead inside! and now after recovering less than month ago i tore the tendon again! thats another year i have to deal with!
I pray for u man but dont ever quit.

That’s a right good post friend....

Don’t stop training MrMR. It’s not the end of the world and that’s only one docs opinion. There have been athletes with complete tears and tendon rips... rotator cuff, you need to see if you need surgery to remove scar tissue or that graph operation (not that familiar with it)... but you must have been in some other accident, your shoulder issues can't be so recent... It takes allot of abuse and misuse for your rotator cuff to be worn...

If were the case that you lifted some enormous weight and then felt this pain we could look at minor or major pulls and tears... strain on ligaments... the fact that your doc is saying its your rotator cuff makes me ask what have you been doing, do you play additional sports??

I have seen people come back just fine from rotator cuff issues. I most recently had a friend about two years ago could not lift his arm due to a large amount of aggravatingly, painful scar tissue surrounding the joint of his shoulder and cuff... After surgery he went through therapy (you know the whole rubber band thing) and is now back lifting... He doesn't go ape shit on the presses but his bench is decent again...

Right, Right....no doubt on that one,,,

I like to think the injuries that I have suffered I've come back stronger...

My worsted was a major pull of my anterior deltoid... I was 19 benching 315... I thought I was big shit, man... throwing weight on and off I actually benched 325 before that... and was like shit... I’ll take it down a notch and I'll pop out four more... no spotter (fuking dumbass, a spotter could have caught my strain) I felt some awkward feeling on the press motion then on the decent I felt a worm like feeling in my shoulder I strained to keep the weight off me and then boom... weights slide off one side then the other... by the time I got standing up my shoulder had swollen but only the anterior... like it protruded out... I thought I was so fuked... I was out for about 6-8 months from hard training but I didn't quit.

I've had nothing but minor pulls in my legs but a major groin pull; man that one looked ass nasty... looked like a knot right next to the old boys...

The groin happen right after my knee injury; most likely a Posterior cruciate strain and a minor pull of my right ham followed by the pulled groin...
I was juking my boys playing tackle at a park and oops... tha next day was when I realized I could extend my leg but I could not retract or pull my weight sitting in a chair...

(One of you is a Med Student... which ligament was it)

I went out got wasted at a Korn concert the next weekend and due to over comp between my legs in the mosh pit, I pulled my right groin... I was out for about 9mo due to re-injury trying to come back too fast with the big boy weight...

second opinion, a subluxated shoulder can be fixed with a few adjustments to the AC joint by a chiro or an osteopat along with some rehab. read the rehab post, you are FAR from done, i blew out my rt rotator cuff a few years ago, couldnt even shift my car into gear with my rt arm for 6 months, i rehabed and i am stronger than ever now.

Thanks Doc ... I've screwed up plenty of times and thought the worst only to come back stronger... Thats a good confidence builder to hear about your injury

Reply to that dead lift post... I'm gonna try to build my strength back faster switching from sumo to conventional... I've just come off my leg injuries... I've been steadily getting stronger and now I'm getting back to the weight I have confidence with again... My goal is to (return where I left off) perform my squat at or a little below parallel with 405 for 6-8 reps... I am still at partials in the 8 rep range... But for me 15 partials equal 4-6 below parallel squats, especially with that weight, ya know...

thanks for all the helpful replies guys, i just got back from another meeting with my shoulder surgeon to discuss results from MRI, it turns out i have instability but he cant tell if its ligimentis (sp?) or a blankart lesion not sure what either is, he also said i have impingement...he said the way to solve my problem is by heating up my shoulder capsul with a hot probe to shrink it, i asked him how long would i need to recover from that, he said 12-18 months so i dont think im going to go through with it, ill just do my very best to strength my rotator cuff

you're not done. i tore ligaments all down my delt, and even up to my clavicle, and I'm back lifting now. just don't rush into it or you'll do more damage. rest and pt is key

just to add to what i said...i have to have a diagnostic arthroscopy (sp?) because of a suspected bankart lesion...is that serious? and here is my main question...

i really dont want to be out for 6 months lifting...could i just strengthen my rotator cuff muscles and avoid over head movements, the surgeon said worst possible case scenario is ligamentous (not sure wat that is either)

my next appointment is july 14th, the real question is, do i start my dbol/test/eq cycle or get the bankart tear surgery which means anoth 3- 6 months no lifting...

here's the issue guys, i get really self concious when taking time away from the gym and i really do get depressed over my size quite easily, i dont like going out or working out unless im wearing a jumper, so i was really looking forward to this cycle as ive just come back from a bout of depression.

so do i cycle and work around my injury, or get the surgery and set my physique development back quite far

i appreciate very much all the responses that have been given,

    thank you

Dude, seriously... it aint that bad... You can cycle or not... Just know both sides of the coin... When you have surgery like that your body does go on a heightened hormone boost... You can eat clean and well and still train... You can juice and recoop... don’t matter

Just be smart... It sounds pretty weird to me... Cuz if you don’t have the desire or drive to train while not on juice... your gains on juice aren't gonna hold and wont amount to much any way...

I'm serious; I don’t want you to take this as a flame... When I hear guys talk like this I get a feeling they don’t know much about diet... It pains me bro...

You could even do a T3 cycle no juice and eat well... Boost your protein intake to 2g per lb, eat low processed or no processed carbs, unsaturated fats for the majority among fats...

I won’t tell you what to do cause I've done all three... just for the experience, I’ve had surgery on my face twice and when I had all my injuries to my legs (pulls and strains) I didn’t work legs for 8mo…
Flip a coin dude, it really aint that bad… Eat… man, seriously…

I don’t care which one you choose but when I get off juice I eat the fuk outta everything in site so I don’t loose my mass, I sprint more to keep my appetite if I’m not using T3 or Juice…
    You’ll figure it out…
    Peace

I forgot to say... Train no matter what... juice or no juice... Your body will heal faster and because you work your legs you will keep a harmonious anabolic atmosphere that will extend into your upper body helping not to loose as much mass...

i of course train when not on a cycle what i meant was if i have surgery i wont be able to lift because of recovery from the surgery and id inevitably lose size that way

After about a week you should start using you shoulder in stabilizing lifts... hold hand out while elbow is at you side (should look like a 90 degree angle) and with you good arm hand the other a 5lb dumbbell and hold for 5-10sec... Then use a 10lb in working sets if applicable...

You will have rubber band work after about 2 weeks if I'm not mistaken... Doc Sust, do you know about that??

You can train one week after surgery... Legs and your good arm and chest... don’t fall under the assumption that since you layoff the shoulder you will become disproportionate you will regain size in the weak area faster once healed if you work around your injury during recoop...
