louie a simple test given out by your family doctor (usually) can diagnose you.

    However there are alway alternatives.

Adderall is tough cause it kills your appetite and can be addicting.
Strattera is the better of the two it is a non-narcotic ADHD MED.
You can always lookin into nootroopics. Pircetam is a well know nootroopic.
Also there are Herbal formulas with huperazine and other herbs to help maintain concentraition and focus.

There are a few member on this board that can give you better feedback than I.

PM tai I know he uses it.

the meds may help focus more, but they all have far more sides than benefits. they also don't cure your adhd, as is shown by it's onset once again by discontinuance of any of those products. all they do is cover up the issue while you're on it.

i do have a scattered mind as well, though i would never call it a "disorder". nowadays, everythings a "disorder" or a "disease". used to be that kids were hyperactive, now it's "they have adhd". you used to have indigestion, now you have "acid reflux disease". they want to term everything a disease so you feel more of a need to go on a med because of it.

having a hard time focusing on one thing at a time is typically either a personality matter or a lifestyle matter, not a "disorder". there are plenty of methods of naturally adjusting the way you handle things that can help you focus more without drugs, and it's a permanent fix when you integrate them into your everyday life. search the net and i'm sure you'll be able to find some of the methods.

on one good note, studies have shown that the more scattered personalities (typically categorized as add or adhd) tend to be more efficient at correlating information than those who focus strongly on one thing at a time. so, there are advantages to this "disorder", if you learn how to control it when need be.

I have ADHD ..and take Ritalin

There is a difference between the occasional time someone forgets something or can't concentrate and someone who actually has ADHD.

The difference is most people can concentrate if they force themselves, whereas if you have the disorder, there is nothing you can do to bring you back, because the lack of focus is almost absent mind - You don't even realize that it's happening till the end of the day when you have absolutely nothing completed, but quite a few things started.

I was diagnosed as a child and took Ritalin for 5 years, when my parents decided they didn't want a child with that kind of stigma and took me off it.

My absentmindedness, loss of focus, failure to pay attention, day dreaming, interrupting was consider cute and quirky.. Till my late 20's when it started to become a huge issue at work and i realized that the things that i thought were cute, and most other people had for most of my life, were now.. Well annoying.

I have a corporate job and day dreaming in meetings, interrupting my boss and even the president of the company with sometimes subjects that weren't even pertinent, was becoming detrimental for my career. And no I couldn’t stop myself from doing it.. Half the time I didn’t even realize that I was doing it and when it was pointed out to me after the fact I would become defensive.

I have been taking Ritalin for about 2 years and my professional life has changed drastically and I thank god for that. I am not a stupid woman, most people would consider me pretty smart, but by not dealing with my ADHD – I was harming my career and even my social life (when your dating someone and you appear not to be interested in what they are saying because you never let them finish their sentences – people become hurt because it looks like you just don’t give a SH*T.)

In regards to meds not curing it, your right, but the quality of life of someone who truly suffers from ADHD is affected tremendously by taking meds - to me this benefit, far outweights any side effects.

I haven't even been depressed, always was a happy person, but when i started hurting people by my absentmindness and it appearing as if i didn't care - there were days when i wanted to just to sit in my room alone, rather than face people and get told again that i just wasn'tr listening or didn't care.

And your right everyone has a hard time focusing at one point in their life - the difference for someone with ADHD,is that not fucusing and not paying attenion, is well apart of their life and it won't jsut go away, like it does for most people. It's not something they can really fix.

I think ADHD brains are better at correlating information because, at least for me, I try to tackle tasks that im interested infirst and then sprinkle the ones im less interested in among them. Also because i have ADHD I feel like i have to prove I can do it.. as i do consider it a disavatage and i do feel i have been penalized for it before.. kinda like i will show them attitude (not sure if this make sense)

Someone once made the comment, when i did something a little off

    "You're lucky your pretty"

That has nothing to do with what i can accomplish, it's what i look like..

Can i surive without Ritalin.. YES.. will i reach my full potential.. probably not..

I have a twin sister and she has obviously been around me and close since our conception.. Every day.. since i started taking meds she says she has seen a tremedous improvment..

I don't lose words anymore.. it's hard to explain.. but i now have direction, where as before everything got lost before it even left my head.

Not everyone who has ADHD has the exact same symptoms as there r different type of ADD. I have a ton of information if you are interested in some research. (There are even on line tests, but of course not necessarily a 1005 accurate)

I dated someone last year who threw it in my face, so having someone who is supportive and understands is awesome.

You should go to your GP and ask for a referal to a psychologist, to get a proper diagnosis

to you mizfit, i'm sorry about your adhd issues. i'm glad you weren't offended by any of my remarks, as i can assure you that wasn't their intent. i just know many people because of their lifestyle or habits have a hard time paying attention, and so many people right off the bat look for something to blame it on, so suddenly they'll say they have adhd and want meds.

if you try everything else and absolutely nothing works, then i'm not against taking meds that can alleviate problems. i just think people jump the gun way too often because they're too stubborn to try and deal with their issues. at least you can say you tried, so i give you plenty of credit for that.

my issues with adhd, or moreso, add, were that sometimes when people would talk to me, i'd fade off about other thoughts, and don't realize till halfway through what they're saying or even after they're done talking. sometimes my girl got mad at me for not paying attention, but i always told her i seriously couldn't help it, as by the time i realized it, i already missed what you said.

though i still do occasionally have a hard time focusing, it's just my personality, and in my circumstance, i wouldn't want a med altering that part of my personality. yes i'm scattered, but my scattered personality allows me a diversity of experience that i enjoy.

I agree to many ppl think they have it and they don't necessarily.

Funny you should say that about worrying about your personality being affected.. a change in my personality was a concern for me as well.

Didn't happen.. and trust me it was a big concern. But i also don't abuse the medication. I take what i was prescribe and take breaks on weekends when i can.

I'm alot like mizfit. I was on till I was 13. But then I got sent to a boarding school, got the shit kicked out of me learned how to fight. Started focusing my energy on more important stuff. Now I'm retired US Army! and I tattooed for awhile!
