    Computer keeps restarting

My mates computer just keeps restarting itself everytime it reaches the windows logo screen.

We have tryed everything to sort it but failed. We get the screen up where you can start in safe mode or by the last configuration that worked but nothing fixes it.

Besides formating the drive is there anything I can do ?

yeah, theres loads of stuff on it and wants to avoid formatting if he can. I can think of any other way cos I can only access screens where you press F8, F12 and F2 keys

ok...well what you can do is reinstall windows on it. There is a repair feature on the xp install cd if your cd is bootable. That should get you to be able to logon to it again. After that i'd get all data needed and burn it to a cd if you have a burner. Then format and re-install. The repair works alright but it will leave alot of your programs a little buggy or not working at all. Better to just start from scratch.

for future reference...it's usually a good idea to keep your OS on the main C drive partition and use another partition (preferably on another hd if you got 2) for your other data. That way , you can just format the OS and keep most of your documents and such.
