    Question Growth in a Career

How long do you think you should reasonably stay at a company if your career still has potential for growth?

Is there a length of time that you think is too short or too long?

I have pretty much worked full time since i was 16 - had my first job for 9 years, and subsequently went on to work in my chosen profession for 3 years at one company, and im heading into 3 at my current.

I think it depends on the reality of actually moving up. If you can see it happening, or things shifting that would give you the opportunity then I would stay... but I got tricked in to staying at my last job, they promised a new position to me and kept dangling it in front of me.. then I realised it wasn't going to happen and left. Also, if you like the company then maybe it's worth a little longer of a wait to move up..

I'm happy and doing well.. but a few new opportunties have come up and i'm not sure if i should pursue them or not.

I work in advertising and national sponsorships - client side.

I always wonder about people who stay in their professionalc areer at the same company forever - you start becoming the company... and lose focus, making it harder to find a job later because it might be hard to adapt to a new culture.

I agree... if you stay too long you become stale. People don't want to have to break all your old habits and go through massive growing pains.. .. but then if you're constantly switching company's you look like flighty and unstable. But of course that wouldn't apply to you Miz since you've been there for 3 yrs...

I think if you're thinking about other opportunities then maybe you're ready to move on and start a new challenge... I would definitely consider it.. could be really good

i been at the same company for almost 6 years. Got the job about 2 years after high school. In IT, there isn't really any where for me to go upward wise. Sys admin is pretty much as high as it gets, so I really don't care what i do or where. I don't leave companies cus i like the people i work with.

If you are not completely happy, then find a new job. I'm constantly looking for new opportunties, where I may be happier.

I've only had one job that I've ever liked, and was laid off due to down sizing.

I like my job.. but also like the idea of starting somewhere new..

Basically i do alot of projects on my own and the other two chicks i work with are joined at the hip.. sometimes the fact that they gotta hold hands to go pee.. i find disturbing.. nice girls.. I like them both.. but i don't understand why they aren't individuals.. and when ever i need some sort of assistance.. neither can help me.. They don't know how to do my job.

You like your job, but do you love your job? If you can't imagine doing anything else, then it's not your dream job.

If you are considering doing something else, then try it. You can always go back to your old job, if you don't connect with the new on.

    It's in the same field..

    Just a different company..
for my career i chose something i'm good at, not necessarily what i want to do.

You have to find a balance with work - something you can do, that doesn't make you hate living and paying the bills.

Need more info Miz. If I recall correctly, you are in marketing. What type of marketing(products, services...) are you in and what is your title. Sales and marketing go hand-in-hand, 3 years is not very long in these fields. Make sure that you put as much of yourself into the marketing as you do the company you are working for. Regardless, you could always approach the person in charge and ask them what the chances are of you moving up in the future. Tell him/her that you are ready for more responsibilities, either way you will obtain the information needed to make the appropriate decision in regards to your career.

I honestly do love what I do. I will never punch a timeclock. As a teen, my dad made me do every nasty job that he could think of. Not only to develop good work habits, but to also make me not want to do these types of jobs as an adult: Roofing(hot tar and shingle), Barg work(hardest job that I have ever had), concrete, insulation removal, farming(actually shoveling horse shit), cleaning the inside of railroad cars. I hated him for it at the time, but he did it to make me better and it worked.

I dunno the marketing assitant with Microsoft was a long interview about 1 hour and some hard questions..

What does thinking out of the box mean to you and when did you display it?

What is a marketing vechile and which one does microsoft use the post?

The first one UFT recruitment assistant was 15 min pretty easy THE ONLY THING is my Collar was messed up on my suit becasue i took it b4 becasue IT WAS/STILL IS SOOOO HOT TODAY. But the Two older ladies were nice and said i looked good. (All black suit with a plain white tie) but she took a call regarding her hair during my interview. But i think it went well

    a marketing manager?

Some fields r easier to go ahead..

for example to be a manager at a fast food joint (I was one when i was 17) all you gotta do is apply for the position and if your suitable, you get it.

Other career choices, it's a bit harder..

to be honest, the person i know who's done the most career-wise interms of upward mobility is my soon-to-be ex uncle and he changes jobs like he changes underwear. he went from engineering to management/consulting and then changed from firm to firm until he got a partnership. this is a guy with very little going for him besides his carreer though.

no offense mang...but be respectful. Oh and NEVER count your chickens before they hatch. Count on your internship...but until they offer the position...don't assume you're getting it. I've promised the same thing in some of my previous employees when i managed our dept in my company. And I let alot of em go.

I wasn't actually thinking he was laughing at me.. Just didn't see how anything he said was any bit encouraging for FaizakaFez, and the post had no relation to what either one of us had said. - boasting about a hope or promise makes no sense to me - especially when as you said the chicken hasnt been hatched.

    Sure Zimmy,
Nope I'm supposed get an internship in September to December o( 4 months ) or i could do an 8 month one from Sept- May. I applied to microsoft because it was posted on the website at school( also applied at Toyota , Siemens , PWC cant rember the rest ). i have no real prefrence. Just a place with good experince. If you want to help me out that would be great. Were allowed to get internships outside of what the school has posted.

    Thanks
