the most common palpitation is the extrasystole, or premature contraction. what happens is the heart contracts prematurely, then very briefly pauses to "reset" itself, and the next beat is usually harder than normal. the most telltale sign of this one is to feel your heartbeat and if during one of your palpitations you get a quick two beats in a row, followed by a short pause, then a hard beat and back to normal rythmn again, that's just a premature contraction. though they can feel quite uncomfortable due to the heart "resetting" itself with that extra forceful contraction, they tend to be harmless.
almost everyone gets them occasionally and in almost all cases are absolutely safe and nothing to worry about. excessive stress can definitely increase the amount of them you have, but they should be of no concern whatsoever. i get them all the time personally and i've become quite used to them. yes, i live a very stressful life and need to learn to chill.
