    Home Gym

I was thinking today about a home gym....and than I went and checked out Mavsluva's thread about his home gym...just seems to be so convinient even though there is considerable cost involved in it. The main reason I'm think about doing this is, I'm not going to be going out and partying anymore, I'll be working out a lot more, and it'd be nice to do it at home...I live with my girlfriend and we have a spare bedroom that I was using for my kegerator, but I'll be getting rid of that as well for the next 18 months...the probabtion officers here actually DO show up at your home for random checks...ghey....anyways, what do you guys think I should take a look at?

    I've been thinking:

    Smith Machine: Bench/Incline/Decline...Squats...Shrugs...Upright Row...Military Press...Any others?

Dumbells: I don't know whether to go hex style, or get one of the adjustable systems, until I get past 50lbs on most of my lifts, and than spend the extra cash....with these I can do...curls/hammer curls...chest flys...cuban presses...front dumbell raises...tricep ext...typical back excercises...

Than, I'd get a barbell and an EZ bar for some other excercises and obviously plates....

Anyone else have any ideas? I'm gona start looking around tommorow but want to try to keep the cost down as much as I can..

Has anyone ever gone into a Second Wind Fitness? They sell used equipment, but I don't know how cheap it is.

You're going to outgrow those 50lb dumbbells real fast (I hope). Smith Machine is waste of good money imo, way too ridged for quality free-range lifts. Why not get a (squat) cage with an adj. bench (flat, decline, incline)? Same amount of space is used and you can develop your isolation points as well and do a thousand more exercises as well.

Thank you for your input. That's not a bad idea at all.

I hope your floor is strong in your spare room if your squating youre soon gonna build up to around 150k if youre not doing that already plus whatever you weigh possibly close to a quarter tonne concentrated on the surface area of your feet, just my two peneth... oh yeh with the smiths or the squatr cage as Johny-too-small suggested you can do calf raises and seated calf raises if you use your imagination

Second Wind is a big fitness retail chain. As far as how cheap it is what do you mean? Depends on what you are buying. Second wind isn't a brand

He'll be okay, any modern floor system can support 3,200 lbs (40lbs live, 10 lbs dead psf) in a 8'x8' area without any deflection at all.

I'll make sure to get ahold of you gixxer, thanks for the input. Also, I live on the bottom floor of an apartment complex...nothing below me, so I'm not too worried about it.

dont know your location country wise, but there are many options. various benchs ranging from many prices. im in the uk and home gym. im looking at upgrading my equipment. search around you can get good deals.
imoa smith machine probably isnt worth it just yet. get a good bench that you can possibly upgrade get a squat rack and your all set,
