NYPD to test cops for steroid use

Stung by a recent controversy involving illegal steroid use among its ranks, the New York Police Department says it will now randomly test police officers for steroid use.

The new policy takes affect in July, the start of the new fiscal year, and will be part of the NYPD's long-standing zero tolerance policy for drug use.

Previously, officers were only tested for steroid use if the NYPD has reason to believe they were using such drugs. The random tests for other drugs will remain in place.

Nineteen officers in recent months have been implicated in the ongoing steroid investigation involving Lowen's Pharmacy in Bay Ridge.

Five of those officers have been suspended and a sixth one has been placed on modified duty, says Deputy Commissioner Paul Browne, the NYPD's top spokesman.

On Jan. 29, John Rossi, an owner of Lowen's and a potential target in the investigation, shot himself to death in an office above the pharmacy.

But of course its such a crime for a police officer to look after himself and be better all round so they can catch more criminals!

Sometimes makes me wonder if the people who make these rules have shares in doughnut shops n such alike, and with officers looking after themselves there sales are down!

Im not denying there a potentially dangerous compound, but i totally disagree there a 'poison'.

And im sure most police officers who take AAS 'use' them, and not 'abuse' them which is where the danger lays.

Steroid testing is expensive. I bet the test less than a quarter..

There is always a slippery slope when it comes to the legality of drugs and them being self induced on private time. IMO

There are two sides to cops and steroids......Do you want weak cops or do you want very aggressive and strong cops. I know i have seen more than a few videos of cops behaving more than badly. Its a catch 22.

Personally, I dont think any drugs should be illegal.

We(Legislation) have shown we dont know what should and shouldnt be illegal. Its that simple.

Make them all legal or all illegal...... This ideaology that the FDA can and will make sound decisions is for the birds.

Too much money and politics involved for any kind of common-sense to prevail.

I can't believe how wrong you are. You, just like the rest of mainstream North American culture, has been completely brainwashed about drugs and what the definition and meaning of the word DRUG really is. I can't believe people equate drugs with poison. People on this continent have been brainwashed into thinking that the word 'drug' means something illicit, dangerous, illegal, harmful, bad for you, etc. THAT COULDN'T BE FURTHER FROM THE TRUTH!!! 'Drugs' and 'poisons' are two COMPLETELY DIFFERENT THINGS.

Look in your dictionary at the definition of the word drug:

Dictionary definition of the word poison:

-noun
1. a substance with an inherent property that tends to destroy life or impair health.
2. something harmful or pernicious, as to happiness or well-being.


Drugs are substances that are, dare I say, GOOD THINGS! They are here to actually serve a helpful purpose and are designed to help and aid people. Poisons are the exact OPPOSITE! Poisons are designed to KILL.

This society we live in is fvcked up. They've been brainwashed to think drugs = poisons...

Really... I'm not too interested with police being tested. Nothing against the guys, but if they get in trouble in this field of work, it is because their own actions.
