Hair relaxers . . . that's some strong stuff, there, and if you don't apply it right, you can burn your hair, or worse, burn your scalp (the chemicals should never never never contact your skin).
"Gentle" hair relaxers are made with calcium hydroxide, and the regular stuff has potassium hydroxide (lye). If you opt for either of these, you want to go to someone who does a lot of this sort of service, someone who can apply it both correctly and quickly.

Something that is much less damaging to your hair and skin is good old-fashioned perm solution. Ya, the same chemicals used to put curls in hair can be used to take curls out. Again, you need to find a shop that does a lot of this type of service if you want it done right.

After you put harsh chemicals on your hair a few times, you'll have to apply lots of conditioner on a regular basis to get anything close to a silky appearance . . .

If it was me, no, I wouldn't bother. Best thing is to learn to love your hair as it is, or else find a barber who can cut or straighten it the way you like it.

I know a few people that use relaxers. Just make sure to use "No lye" relaxers. Frmo what they tell me, the Lye really destroys your hair.

Usually the "no lye" relaxers are made with calcium hydroxide instead of sodium hydroxide. It's still a harsh chemical, but not quite as bad as sodium hydroxide.

To tell you the truth, it's very difficult to recommend a specific product without examining your hair and scalp. Your best bet would be to visit a shop that does a lot hair relaxing and has a good reputation.

    Good luck . . .

I have an annoying cowlick in the front of my hair, I use relaxer to control the cowlick.

My hair has yet to fall out and it has not changed anything about my hair for the bad.
