I know everybody is different but wondering if there is a rule of thumb. I've seen some people start off with Test only, or Test and Dbol, but when can you / should you start looking at throwing in Tren, or some other compounds?

thats a good question ,i know guys who have been training for 30 + years and they do test only ,they still get great gains becasue they follow a correct pct and time of period ,each to there own ,do your reserch and see how you go with your gains as you said everyone is different so each to there own.
I'd say it can be dependent and of course is your own hopefully education decision in the end. One cycle usually is the recommendation, but nothing wrong with going 2, 3, 4 cycles with test only IMO
I'd start mild IMO, dbol, deca, save the stronger compounds for later (tren) for when you are really trying to max out your physique IMO but of course in the end is your own choice.
More hardcore training and diet, less drugs
So far I'm airing with the conservative side, and doing the work in the weight room and kitchen. Although from most of the substances I've seen I only have been keen to try Tren. But I think I will wait at least one more cycle before I dabble in it, or perhaps something else.
