What the hell do those Envelopes on the left side mean?

just scroll down to the bottom of the page and there is a legend that explains it.
black dot means you have replied. If it is read it means it has been viewed 50 or 75 times, can't remember. I think grey is you have already viewed all the posts and red or yellow means you have not viewed all the messages. I can't see them right now, but that is the basic idea of them.
