Elderly Gay Man Stoned to Death in Pa

A young Pennsylvania man who claims a gay senior made unwanted sexual advances toward him said the Old Testament instructed him to beat the victim to death with a sock full of rocks.

According to the New York Daily News, “John Joe Thomas of Upper Darby told police he beat Murray Seidman using a sock that was stuffed with rocks because he read in the Old Testament that homosexuals should be stoned to death.”

Police said the 70-year-old Seidman, a laundry worker at the local hospital, was hit in the head about 10 times. Thomas, 28, was the sole beneficiary of the victim’s will, although the relationship between the men is unknown.

Seidman was dead for at least five days before police found him, the Daily News reports. Thomas left him in his Lansdowne apartment and then returned days later, trying to make it appear as if he had just found the body in a phone call to police on January 12

Sounds to me like there was more to the story: the kid had some sort of "relationship" with the older man, and was the sole beneficiary of his will.

I don't think it's as simple as some religious fanatic killing a gay man, though the headline seems intentionally misleading that way.

Found a little more. I would have expected to find more but surprisingly i can't.

LANSDOWNE, Pa. - March 18, 2011 (WPVI) -- Police have made an arrest in the brutal beating death of a 70-year-old man inside an apartment building earlier this year in Delaware County.

John Joe Thomas, 28, who lives in the same building as the victim in Lansdowne, was arrested on Thursday and charged with first-degree murder in the death of Murray Seidman.

Police say Thomas confessed to the crime.

Back on January 12th, police were called to the Ath-Dara Apartments on Lansdowne Avenue for a report of a person banging on doors and screaming in the hallway.

When officers arrived, they say they found Thomas sitting in the hallway crying. He allegedly said "I'm not going down there again, there is too much blood."

Officers went into Seidman's apartment where they found dried blood spatter on the floor, walls and furniture.

Seidman's body was found face-down on the living room floor.

When he was interviewed, Thomas allegedly told police that he read in the Old Testament that homosexuals should be stoned in 'certain situations.'

According to court documents, Thomas said Seidman made sexual advances toward him over a 'period of time.' Thomas told police that he prayed for an answer and the answer he received was to put an end to Seidman's life.

So, Thomas told police, he took a rock from outside the apartment, put it in a sock and beat Seidman approximately 10 times in the head.

After the final blow, Thomas told police made sure Seidman was dead he threw his bloody clothes in a dumpster and left. He claims he returned a few days later to make it appear he had just discovered the body.

Thomas also told police he had spent nearly every day with Seidman, and he had the power of attorney over Seidman's affairs.

Police say they also learned that Thomas met with a lawyer and prepared a will for Seidman, to which Thomas is the sole beneficiary.

However, if Thomas was after the money, he never got it. According to county records, Seidman's will has not been probated.

I would think there are other factors such as greed playing a role also and there very well may be but apparently tr guy said himself it was because of religion. Probably in order to help an insanity plea.

That's what I was thinking too.

Odd he would be living with the man if he was so fanatically about it. lol.

I hope they lock this little bastard up and throw away the key.

Seems to me this guy knew three clear things about Steidmen: He was old, he was gay and he had quite a bit in his will.

It wouldn't surprise me to learn that this guy gave Steidmen the wrong impression, gets secured in the Will, and then thinks "well i dont want people to think im gay", beats this old guy to death. Im pretty sure he also thought this would be a quicker way to get to the Will as well. Upon realising he couldn't get away with it, is now going down the "Bible told me to" route in the hope he'll get a reduced sentence on some "impaired judgement" plee. It's the only thing that makes sense, why would this kid be in Steidmens will? I don't know what is worse: the fact this guy premeditated the whole thing or if infact, he thought it was okay cause the Bible gave him this impression.

Damn, that old fellas last moments on Earth must have been horrific.

Other than a life insurance policy, I fail to see what money or assets the killer could have been after. The man lived in an apartment complex, which removes a home, which is typically an elderly person's most valuable possession, from the picture.
