    Gardening

So im starting my first garden in the yard and things are looking nice.

Planted all sorts of goodies, some blackberries/raspberries, dwarf lime tree, hass avocado tree, sweet corn, tomatoes, carrots, potatoes, and some strawberries.

Now this is my first experience growing crops and I was wondering if anyone had any general tips for me, Im in Socal zone 19 and have set up pretty much everything to produce close to July/ August with the exception of the avocados which have probably close to 3-4 years before they start bearing fruit.

One thing I am looking into is edamame beans. But I cant seem to find any locally.

I can do seeds although I prefer to get small plants and just transplant them that way ill cut out 2-4 weeks of germination. Anyone have any good hook ups on the net or anyone grown edamame personally with tips? Or just general gardening dos and donts?

Go to your local Hydro shop and get some fertalizer. They have great organic fertalizer. That shit is steroids for your veggies.

Let us know how the potatoes come along. I have always wanted to, but never tried growing them. You might consider looking at your diet and trying things you eat all the time. I have spinach, romaine lettuce, tomatoes and green beans among other things growing at the moment. The leafy greens dont make it to long in the summer here in So Cal, but i can plant them again in the fall. The only advice I have is to remember to water them, but dont flood them out!

You mean zone 9? I'm about to start planting a little pepper garden myself. My first time as well.

inlind empire, zone 19. I find it very strangely addicting! I would liken it to a very small sense of fulfillment I guess?

It feels pretty self sufficent that I am sowing the land and doing essentially what we were put here on earth to do. Plus I figure I should start getting in the habit of it now considering 2012 is around the corner lol.

Why would you plant black berries? Ive been trying to kill the ones from the neighbors for 18 years now. They are the fruits of the devil himself. LOL They taste good but at least where I live you can find them anywhere growing wild. It's as useless as growing ivy. Only good if you want to annoy your neighbors and try to fight it from taking over your yard.

Good luck with the rest of the garden. I usually only plant sun flowers because they look cool, pumpkins and corn for Halloween.

Dont eat the potatoes if the skin is green or at least dont eat the skin. It has natural bacteria in the skin that can be bad for you until it's fully mature and turns brown.

To keep deer, rabbits, squires and the such away spread cyan pepper around and even on some of the fruit/vegetables.

Ive been using berries in my diet as a carb source recently and LOVE them, so blackberries and raspberries are more than welcome!

Tell me that again in 3 years when you are fighting them back from taking over you entire yard and your neighbors are cussing you out daily. LOL I would much rather walk a couple of blocks to pick them from a vacant lot or most anywhere along side the roads. Those things grow like 1ft a day in the right condition, no joke. You can almost see them growing. LOL

No doubt berries are good for you, just after years of fighting to keep them out of my yard growing through my fence from my neighbors side and seeing how they have taken over so many other yards no thanks.
