    Help with presentation... diet related

I've been asked to do a 2o minute presentation about diet and nutrition for school students. The audience will be a group of teachers who work with children of various ages (elementary to middle school).

I'd like to start off with a brief video clip (thinking something from youtube), discuss diet mistakes and negative impact on school performance, how to eat properly (maybe brief macro lesson), and suggestions for helping students and teachers eat healthier and make better food choices in a school setting.

Let me know what suggestion you have? Wasn't sure if this would get more attention here or in the diet section so feel free to move it mods. THANKS!!!

As someone who works with teachers regularly, I think you should mention snack time, making healthy snacks, educating kids and teachers on proper school lunches, and promoting good diet behaviors.

I would go over myths and definitely cover crash diets and the horrible effects they have on metabolism and fat gain. Explain that metabolism adjusts accordingly. I would try to explain how insulin works on a basic level, shuttling nutrients to their designated places so combining fats and sugar is a recipe for disaster. Then after you explain some of those key concepts go on to talk about nutrients and healthy eating habits, stress the importance of exercise.

I would definitely stress that kids are at a vulnerable age with developing their bodies and eating habits, more so than their minds. This is a time when the things they put in their body will shape them for the rest of their lives. They are susceptible to fat cell multiplication more now than at any other time in their life (pregnancy maybe being an exception?).

The guy you want to pm is musclescience as not only is he a brilliant fitness expert, but he is a teacher as well.

Try not to go over their heads. Try to speak mostly in laymen's terms.

Thats going to be the hardest part. I was thinking of doing something similar to the Milos Sarcev videos in the diet section, but that would go over most peoples heads.

I had to teach a cardiac class once...and used a meal from a fast food outlet and showed the calorie composition compared to other foods...along with the amount of fat in a meal using blocks of butter.

I also had a few plates of real, clean food and proper portion sizes. Visuals help understanding as opposed to numbers I found.

    Just a thought......

Remember this is for kids you don't need to do a body building diet. Tips on just eating healthy that are basic and easy to understand and follow

If you can pick it, hunt it, or grow it, you can eat it. The further you get from the natural source, the worse the foods get.

I did the same when teaching nutrition and it worked like a charm, visuals seem to work best.
