Serious question about tics and magnesium

Lately you could say I have, what you could call this compulsive need to blink a lot and blink hard. It's gotten really bad in the last couple of weeks and my eyes are red and watery a lot lately.

I also find i've been scrunching my face up, mostly my mouth or nose and it's very annoying, and its got to the point where other people are beginning to notice this, and im beginning to freak out that i've developed a type of nervous tic.

I've done a bit of research, and i've read that sometimes this can occur if your magnesium levels are low, which can occur in heavy weight lifting.

I'm going to go see the Docs about this, but im wondering if the ZMA suppliment may help me out.

Has anyone else ever had this problem? It's beginning to make me feel self conscious around people for fear of them watching me do this annoying compulsive thing.

seems doubtful to me that low magnesium levels could have such a profound effect on your mannerism. Go ahead and add as a supplement and see. But keep your plan B as going to the doc.

Your doc should also ask you if anything significant has happened to you, job loss, difficult breakup, recent tragedy, all that head shrink stuff. Quite often, this could be a way you are expressing stress at an unconscious level, without fully realizing the triggering event.

And not to freak you out, but there could be a physiological reason for uncontrolled behavior as you describe. The chance is remote, but it could be a sign of some type of cranial or spinal tumor. An MRI could quickly dispel this concern.

I did the same exact thing as a child; I remember doing this as if it were yesterday because it was so bothersome. I wish I could tell you the ultimate reason for my behavior but I can't. My parents were going through a nasty divorce and I was in and out of hospitals because of a recently diagnosed blood disorder. Coincidentally, during this same time, I was also fitted for a nice thick pair of glasses because my eyes were so horrible. Sooooo, it could be something as complicated as stress induced or an easy fix w/ an eye exam...Again, I wish I had a more conclusive answer for ya.

When was the last time you've had your eyes checked? Do you notice having headaches more often?

    Good luck!

thought that thread read 'tits' and magnesium at 1st glance lol

on a more serious note, ive had similar little habits like that, strangely in the eye area also, constant feeling that my eyelids where sticking together resulting in more blinking. it would come and go and the more i thought about it the more id be aware of it and the more id blink. i think these things can become subconsciously habitual.

    I wish I was!

It's not something that happens involuntary. It's more like a compulsion.

I do admit, the blinking is worse if im watching something bright, like a movie on a screen, looking at a monitor, or my phone in the dark, outside and its a bright day, etc....so like LadyBlah said, i'm hoping it's something related to my eyes. Maybe I need glasses, yet my vision is still good, I can still read books without squinting or anything like that. The "face scrunching" is nowhere near as bad as my eyes, and if im distracted, busy, nothing happens. It's usually if im on my own, not doing anything. It could be stress related, I am kinda stressed. I mean I graduated from Uni back in July and im still looking for a Grad job. I do work at the moment, but it's just delivery driving, and I effing hate it! lol

I'm really hoping I don't have a spinal tumour :s in the event I do, I will make a bucketlist and I will endeavour to incorporate TimesRoman onto it in some form or another!

But yeah, think i'll book a check up with the Docs this week.

Ugh, in the event that it's something terrible

found this within wikipedia and tourrette as i have been close to the syndrome...also have had similar off and on habits through life...tourrette just happens to be a more severe or more noticeable tic disorder...

    (Classification

Tics are sudden, repetitive, stereotyped, nonrhythmic movements (motor tics) and utterances (phonic tics) that involve discrete muscle groups.[8] Motor tics are movement-based tics, while phonic tics are involuntary sounds produced by moving air through the nose, mouth, or throat.

Tourette's is one of several tic disorders, which are classified by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) according to type (motor or phonic tics) and duration (transient or chronic). Transient tic disorder consists of multiple motor tics, phonic tics or both, with a duration between four weeks and twelve months. Chronic tic disorder is either single or multiple, motor or phonic tics (but not both), which are present for more than a year.[8] Tourette's is diagnosed when multiple motor tics, and at least one phonic tic, are present for more than a year.[9] Tic disorders are defined similarly by the World Health Organization (International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, ICD-10 codes).[10]

Although Tourette's is the more severe expression of the spectrum of tic disorders,[11] most cases are mild.[12] The severity of symptoms varies widely among people with Tourette's, and mild cases may be undetected.[8])

Maybe I need glasses, yet my vision is still good, I can still read books without squinting or anything like that.

I don't squint while reading either. But watching tv or looking at the computer screen for too long causes headaches, etc. Your near sighted vision is probably fine but seeing things "far" away is what the problem may be, hopefully.

I'm really hoping I don't have a spinal tumour :s in the event I do, I will make a bucketlist and I will endeavour to incorporate TimesRoman onto it in some form or another!

Stay off google until you see a doctor, Flagg! Lol! It really does sound like you just need glasses or contacts. And much luck to you with your job search!!
