*UH_OH Another Thread Which Involves Thought!*

Sorry guys school starts tomorrow and my brain is getting restless...

So we have a lot of people in the US, but since technology increases so fast eventually (if not now) we will have no need for most people so what do we do with them?

Take a factory that required 100 people to operate but now only requires 5; what do we do with the extra 95 people? This is small scale compared to what the real problem is now or will be soon but the question remains.

Those 95 people go into supporting the new technology rather than the old production that they were forced out of. IT, cabling, server assembly, software development, tech support, cable manufacturing, robot repair, etc. Yeah, I know it doesn't work to take a 52 year old General Motors assembly guy that puts dashboards in cars and retrain him to be a software developer. But this is the transition that needs to happen on a large scale.

Haven't really thought it through...just thinking out loud.

When those 95 people lose their jobs, I know what we'll do.... 40 of them will go on unemployment, 40 of them will be moved to a lower paying job, 10 will be retrained, and 5 will go on to make real $... In the meantime our economy will continue to fail and the government will not create any new jobs.. instead we will send another 10 billion$ to rebuild the middle east...

This is a small problem compared to whats gunna happen if technology advances enough to take over lol.....

My friend told me about an experiment that was done wit a super computer. It taught itself the english language..... then they programed a war game and let the computer play it. There were a bunch of different ways to win and take over the world..... The computer chose war and won the game in an obscenely fast amount of time....

I also saw an episode of "through the wormhole" with morgan freeman that was about alien life. There are theories out there that there could be alien worlds that are inhabited by machines. This world would have started off similar to our..... but the technology grew so fast and eventually took over as the dominant life form.

Exactly. I was arguing with someone that we should eliminate welfare or most of it and he said this:
You can only be on welfare for less than 5 years, usually 2-3. He said that in his opinion it is cheaper to keep these people on welfare watching tv all day then to try to pay and retrain them (he said a bunch of things but I forgot them) when they will most likely go back on welfare anyway because we simply don't have the manufacturing type jobs they need.
This upsets me because I don't want to be have to pay for them to sit at home all day while I work. But short of a massacre and forced birth control what is there?

He also said look at places like Somalia, they have no food and they still reproduce like crazy. Taking away their resources does not stop them from reproducing. Maybe we pay them more to not reproduce?

Twist , you have your numbers the wrong way around, the usual mOdel for technology replacing manpower is a 5% loss per year.

This is one of the reasons that AIDS was introduced into societies. Population control.

This is a hypothetical situation... I made up the numbers completely and didn't get them from anywhere. I just want to know what we should do with people for whom there are no jobs/opportunities for.

Artificial Intelligence is the only other "life" on this planet that could effectively replace us.

Technology today makes us lazy. You don't even have to go to the supermarket to get your food because you can go online and have all that delivered for you. Medical Technology now enables us to live way beyond our average lifespan and it also ensures that the weak survive along with the poor.

I sometimes wonder if technology will prevent us from further evolving, because...well there is no point. This would progressively make the human race physically less fit with each generation, though our brain capacity might improve. However this means that a simple virus could easily wipe us out as we all now have shitty immune systems.

Oh contrare! It may evolve us further. Look up "Quantum Evolution" and then consider how man may manipulate that...
