Plain Sugar for insulin spike with PWO shake????

Hey guys, met a guy at the gym who uses a couple of tablespoons of plain white sugar with his post workout protein shake to cause the insulin spike to shuttle the protein to the muscles, does anybody on here do this and if so are there any cons to this? keep in mind the protein he uses is one of those 100% whey isolate with no sugar or carbs in it at all, so his post workout shake is 50grams of that protein plus a couple of tablespoons of white sugar. Is this a good repla***ent for protein+carb PWO shake?

    Thank you!

I prefer oats. You can get insulin spike from complex carbs just like simple carbs.

The pwo insulin spike is a highly overrated, 90's trend. I wouldn't bother with table sugar or otherwise.

lol, you use it for flavor though, not as the primary carb source, right? RIGHT?!?

I use sugar free chocolate syrup and unsweetened cacao powder with Splenda in mine...

this. taking whey will cause one by itself. sugar is the worst food you can put in your body. Even after a workout. Huge difference between the way your body proccesses glucose and sugar. The spike thing is overrated bro science. Just take a whey shake.

Really no need to spike insulin to 'shuttle protein'

insulin is going to be there anyway just from complex carbs and protein synthesis is going to be raised for a much longer period than the often quoted '1 hour window of opportunity' so really it does not matter if you get all of the amino acids stored immediately.. Some would argue that a slower more constant release of amino acids PWO for 4 hours would be more beneficial...

A much better option with regards to 'Spiking insulin' would be to do it Pre/Intra Workout...

Spiking insulin during your training session will blunt the release of cortisol and help to prevent muscle break down (of which is another debate in it self)... It will also help keep glycogen levels 'topped up' (again another thing we could spend hours talking about)...

    lol, yes, flavor/high/gluttony/pleasure/etc./etc.

thats why the diet gurus have to watch what you say ppl like me will hear things like HAVE SUGAR WITH YOUR POST WORKOUT...and NEVER FORGET IT...LOL

i guess its better to have it (chocolate) with whey and peanut butter maybe bananna after a workout than in the evening or breakfast? idk? kinda lowers the GI?
    gimme that at least?

i've actually gone back and forth using sugar free chocolate as well but its expensive as shiat so i alternate that in when its on sale

How much are you using? If it's just a 'squirt', I wouldn't be too concerned, but note that shit is REALLY sugar dense per serving (which I forget what a serving is atm, prob a tbsp or 2)

I used to use pure dextrose post workout- I tried many different amounts ranging from up to 100g even down to 25 g. It just didn't work for me- sugar is sugar. I use whey and just oats now, will add maybe an apple or half banana when bulking and it works much better for me

you dont wanna know...like i said i'm not advising it anyway..i would definitely be better off without but i pick my poison and i try to keep away from sugar the rest of the day and most of the time do ok...then again it depends on goals as well...my resolution is to try to keep most days under 3000 calories til april so for me its about calories i just wanna drop about 10lbs by then

I am one to believe and like the simple sugars after my workout....Personally, I feel like I recover faster. Usually I will take my protein shake with gatorade which is basically the same thing, since it's packed with simple sugars...I look for any drink with about 40-50 grams of glucose, dextrose, maltodextrin etc..

All the rest of my carbs for the day are complex carbs, which is usually oats. Though I personally do like the simple sugars directly after a workout, the main reason for this theory is for people using insulin....So mainly pros would be utilizing this because they are most likely using insulin....A pro will take his protein and then probably take in anywhere between 80-100 grams of simple sugars and then slam a fast acting insulin shot.

Let's put it this way, I would say almost every pro on the Olympia stage takes in simple sugars and then slams an insulin shot after a workout....So does it work, yes. But unfortunately I am not on insulin and I highly doubt you are either, and without insulin this theory isn't as practical....

there's been much discussion from both sides with clinical data.
I'm currently using pwo and during wo two shakes each broke out @ 50 gms 75% simple carbs and 25% protein powder.

there actually books out there on the subject, and many peer reviewed articles in support of what I do.
