I could use some help with diet for MOM

    Quick overview.

I have used this forum to go from 290lbs - 195lbs.

i have refined my diet to work for me with help from many on here.

Now my Mom has asked for diet help and i have know idea on where to start. She is 65 5' and i would guess 165 - 170. very overweight.

her goals are to get to a comfortable living weight. what that weight is she is not sure, but if we could get her to drop 30lbs - 40lbs her quality of life would change a lot.

she is convinced she need a gimic diet but i have convinced her those diet dont address the problem and all that is going to happen is re gaining the weigh with probably more

so far i have here trying to maintain about a 1700 - 2000 cal diet. which i can only assume is far less then what it was.

can anyone help with an easy to follow diet for the undisciplined (i will be in close contact through out the diet for support).

lets start will my goal for her right now is to get to a weight were she can start walking 3 - 4 times a day.

i know not much to go with, but thanks in advance.

unfortunately this is step 1.. becoming disciplined.

what worked for me was 2 things:
1 the desire for becoming world champion that is greater than any desire i have had before
2 deciding to eat to live rather than live to eat
    - before i would eat when i was hungry or bored or upset
    - now i will only eat if i think it is going to help me do something productive, my hunger and boredom and not being happy are no longer reasons to eat

i tried to help my sister out because she wants to lose some weight, she is 17 and probably between 20-25% BF which isnt that bad but she wants to lose a few lbs, she doesnt left weights but plays soccer and field hockey. and since i just dropped almost 30lbs in a few months she wants to do it to, so i have set up many diets for her and told her what she needs to know. but every single day for the last few months all she has said is: "my diet starts tomorrow" unfortunatly she just tore her ACL and cannot exercise so she hasnt made any progress

maybe try to change one thing a time,
1- reduce her sat. fats by a couple grams,
2- change some simple carbs to complex carbs
3- 1 less piece of pizza or whatever secret snacks she has

but ultimately until she decides that she wants to lose weight and is willing to do anything then nothing is really going to happen and even if a few weeks of proper dieting go by eventually shes gonna have a bad day and feast.

i hear ya. to be honest i think she actually is serious this time. It was the same thing wait until my dioet starts. well now she is actually buying good food and has actaull lost 7 lbs but that was on and atkins type diet.
which i feel she is losing as much muscle as fat.
i wouldnt have have offed to help this time if i didn't think she was serious.

so far on her own she is eating a full breakfast 2 omega eggs and 1/2 cup oatmeal

chicken and brown rice for lunch

lean steak at dinner with spinach salad

she has also add more fruits and veggies.

anyway i have convinced here last year ant my nephew grad party if she doesnt change soon she wont get to see the rest of her grandkids graduate. i think it hit home we will see

if she has a high bf% like 30+ and able to handle atkins i would definitely give that a go. at a high bodyfat on a ketogenic diet your body is going to shred the fat quicker than muscle. I just did 2 months of my first keto diet and its alot easier to be at a deficit on keto with <20g carbs than being at the same deficit >100g of carbs, at least for me. i

    ill give it a go.

i have done a keto as last part of my diet. mine was heavy on protein drinks 3 50g shakes a day. can you recommend an alternative to the protein shake for her that is. she has tried the protein drink and doesnt like.

i tried to explain sometime ya just have to suck it up, but try convincing a 65 year old Grandma that.

cheese and fatty meats... i loved this diet because all i ate was any kind of cheese and any kind of fatty meat and bacon... she shouldnt need more than 100g of protein on this diet so it shouldnt be tough for her

    Howdy.

I would have her read my thread from start to finish. This way she could see how I started and how I progressed. Plus food choices I made with some ideas for her and how baby steps make a huge difference. Plus the oat pancakes if she likes pancakes. I promise starting with those will do the trick. And then gradually get her to like other good choices just as much. And to keep a log whether just for herself or to share with you.

And does she want for you to comment on her food? or could this lead to tension? last thing you want to be is a food cop. This can potentially trigger bad choices.

And also I really think an all clean day and then perhaps a day or 2 in a row of high protein with no carbs ( starchy) would help her. I have been doing this lately and feel great. This is more of a lifestyle approach for the long haul which is what she is after.

Keep in mind she will probably not want to be as strict as this place is therefore trying to get her to be like it is here might backfire. This is why I say baby steps. I did baby steps and before ya knew it? pounds starting fading away......

    Good luck to her.

so you already know that it is 80% diet aand can help, but MOM has to do this for herself. My approach was to completely change my diet Plus I was in the gym 6 days aweek which just accelerated the loss and kept my body toned. I started out on 1650 calories so I think your calculations are in play.
