    5 portions a day???

    Hey guys and gals,

In the UK it's recommended that the average person should eat 5 portions of fruit n veg a day. in France I think it's recommended 7 portions of fruit and veg, and China I believe it's 12 (don't know what the.recommendation is in the states or Canada). I think these targets have been set without any nutrition specifics applied, but more this is the number of what the governments think they can get the average person to eat daily.

I just wondered what the nutrition people on here thought about this? If these numbers are slightly overblown, especially with the difference in numbers.
Obviously if it fits into your diet/macros more fruit and especially veg (bulk, maintenance or cutting dependant) is better. But what about very limited calorie diets.

I personally try n get 5-7 portions of veg a day (before I started my educated cut, no fruit I was eating about 12-15 portions)as well multi vits etc. So I wouldn't say I was lacking, but wondered what was the general opinion about minimum portions per day.

Did you investigate the serving size of each portion?

I'm not surprised the UK and US are about the same. Wonder if the recommended 12 portions are a different size.

I shouldn't include Scotland in the UK, I think their recommendation is 3 portions!

It's sad that baked beans (tomato sauce) can count for a portion though.

3 portions per year and that only the onion, mushroom and garlic on their deep fried pizza. Haha

I can't remember where I came across the nations and number think it was maybe the tv show Q.I. (Love that show) I'll try and google it tomorrow and see what turns up about China and their 12 portions.

Yeah I would imagine it wise that while on a cycle more emphasis is placed on the necessity of fruit and veg.
But I was meaning the average person not cycling, but you do bring up a valid point. Have you experience or any information to validate it? Always better to know than to assume.

yes, hence why i take greens supplements and my friends who compete for a living swear by it.

and a word of advice dont listen to any sort of health and food administration and their daily values. i think americans on a 2000 diet is 40 grams of protein.. so that should give you an indication why you shouldnt listen to them.

As I said in the opening post "targets have been set without any nutrition specifics applied, but more the number of portions the government think they can get the average person to eat a day"

Why I wondered what the nutrition people on here thought, if it was about right or we should aim for more of if it was more quality of the nutrients than jut quantity.
Ive heard that 8 prunes will give you all the daily nutrients that you need. not something I've choices to believe or follow, just using it as an.example.

Ha yeah 0 fruit And veg isn't good. But reminds me of Ronnie Coleman, he doesn't eat fruit or veg except for sweet corn I think. He relies on multi vitamins.

I rarely eat vegetables or fruit bc in inhibits the huge amount of meat and potatoes I eat. Would I see benefits in muscle mass with increased vegetable intake?? Many bodybuilders claim to never eat fruit/veg for this same reason. Any thoughts?

Well potatoes are vegetables right?? Guess I just realized that lol. Either way would there be any benefit to adding more vegetables if it cuts back on the amount of high caloric foods I currently eat.

from what I've read about veg, the main reason to eat these is because of the abundance of vitamins and minerals. (micronutrients). These play a huge role in your bodily functions, from muscle development, function of you immune system, mood developments and general well being. A diet lacking in micronutrients even if high in protein wouldn't build the standard of muscle growth and development as a well balanced diet of micronutrients and macronutrients (carbs, protein, fat and fibre) could build. It seems you can only gain better results from.including these into your diet, and as you can't store these, with thr exception of fat soluble nutrients your body will just disregard what it doesn't need. Plus these are normally high in fibre so you may benefit from pooping easier.

I'm sure stem could give you a better and more accurate reason why micronutrients are important, and correct any points where I may be off, or just plain wrong.

As mockery pointed out, you can supplement with green powder so your getting all the goodness with none of the eating large amounts of extra food.

Ok good read.. Ill incorporate some in my diet but man 5-7 servings seems crazy hard. Ill start with four and in three weeks when I re evaluate my diet ill try to add more. Any suggestions for easy ways to add them in my diet?

Because his post was a reply to one of mine and therefore, you commenting to him was in regards to me! So, I'll take it for what it was, a childish , I'll mannered, thinly veiled insult! And by you asking "what does my reply to someone else post have to do with you" I'd like to point out that his reply was to me. So by that logic, why did you jump in with your comment??

From my view point, it seems youre the one that "is trying to start internet fights" with your abrasive tone and ignorant remarks.
I'm not by any means looking for internet fights, so feel free to have the last say, I've had mine.
