pain management for my glass ankle

I have a really painful ankle via a series of nasty injuries, it hurts to walk and at times it hurts so bad I feel physically sick, yet when I hit the gym and perform my leg days it feels solid under stress, why would this be happening?

It's been broken very badly (at the same time as my tib and fib), had an Achilles rupture and I've damaged ligaments in my foot all within the last 10years. It affects the way I walk and I have to wear handmade insoles to help relieve pain. All in all its been damaged quite bad.

Now, I've given up on making it better but I'd just like advice on managing the pain without medication if possible and to know why it doesn't hurt under weights? I'm not really strong so it's not excessive stresses but it's still bloody heavy lol

    Thanks people

not sure why it could be happening, but you might try ice + ibuprofen to relieve the pain

I have tried a few painkillers but I am worried about addiction, it may sound strange but my uncle became heavily reliant on painkillers after an accident and it took control of his life to a degree, I just know I'd need to be reliant on whatever I choose to do, I think I'll give the ice a go regularly and see how that fairs

    Thanks guys

I would be looking into wearing some type of ankle support permanently and also getting xrays to see if you possibly have some bone fragments or bone spurs that's causing the excess pain.

You know your tolerance is better than anyone else and if you have an addictive personality or not so it's probably good to stay away from pain meds if at all possible.

    Agree with previous rec's
Ankle wrap-doesn't have to be tight & uncomfortable to be affective...
Floating bits of junk in the ankle can be a pain
    Ice frequently
Stay smart-active - seeing as activity helps it feel better

Just as a heads up if anyone's interested...after seeing a specialist I've got to go through a rigorous bout of ultrasound treatment on my ankle, further gait analysis, more specific shoe insole inserts and a rather splendid brace to wear when I go to bed, hopefully all this will prevent me walking like a French Duke anymore! ;-D It still won't stop my leg days though!
