    rice - what say you?

i go with the "carbs is carbs" approach... and i see non-brown rice as getting a bad rap in a lot of places. I love Japanese rice, steamed of course. seems a cup has about 250 cals , 54 carbs ... and honestly a cup of cooked rice is a helluva lot. any of you serious bodybuilder types have an opinion on it, do you eat it , etc. thanks. just trying to eat clean and smart (er).

I've always been a rice guy. My mom is an old-school cajun cook, so I grew up eating it. I lived in Southeast Asia for a while and have always loved the food. Both cuisines are centered around white rice. I prefer it over the brown.

Having said that, I have grudgingly changed my diet to eat the brown rice instead of white. It is slower to digest and provides a more constant energy without spiking glucose levels. I'm not saying I never eat white rice; but for my every day carb source, I go with the brown rice, sweet potato, whole wheat pasta, steel cut oats, etc.

    Very good topic.

If you eat anything else along with the rice such as protein or fat, you prevent the spike from insulin...not that it would make much of a difference were it to spike anyway.

The diff between white and brown rice as far as glycemic load is so small it is insignificant.
Nutritionally brown rice is slightly better for you.
Its not something id worry about all that much in the grand scheme of things. That being said I like the nutty flavor of brown rice better.

Nothing wrong with any type of rice. If you want to argue spiking insulin levels look at my response above to DontTaseMe. If you want to argue brown rice has more nutrients than I'd argue they're less bio available in brown rice than in white. End of the day rice is rice, eat the one you prefer but variety can be beneficial.

I'll take the middle eastern and share some Indian cuisine. Love the spicy stuff.

I'm thinking this weekend looks like: beef ribs sauce piquant over short grain rice, kaeng phet red curry over jasmine rice, and chicken tikka masala over basmatti!

You sir just won't over my stomach. My aunt has a small deli/store in Lebanon that makes the best lamb tahini I've ever had. I actually drooled a bit remembering it's taste lol

I have 1 cup of jasmine rice every day with my chicken breast. LOVE jasmine rice. Have been mixing in some dark red kidney beans with it lately, too :-)

X2 on the jasmine rice. It's my main source of carbs. I eat 1 or 1.5 cups of it usually 3 times a day, it goes well with nearly everything and i never get sick of it.
