Not a sarcastic question or trying to stir the pot, but what can we do to prevent 2 countries from cooperating with each other? Seriously, I think if I was in their shoes and had a considerable dislike for the US, it seems like the perfect thing to do. Not only is it a win-win for the countries, but at the same time it’s a huge F U to the US and they are likely laughing their asses off. What concerns me is what if Russia plays along?
I think one step is that we better play nicer with the rest of our allies personally. I’m recalling the board game I loved when I was a teen. It was called Risk and the object was to capture the world. This is another wake up call that we need to take the threat of losing our top seed as a world power as one of our #1 priorities. Instead of fighting ourselves, I think it’s best to change the focus of where we put all of that energy and attention. The media could definitely do a better job of placing more emphasis on stories such as those.
Re: In bold above. They already do, they just play a better game of chess via constantly changing affiliations and subsidies that they feel will be of benefit in the future.
An older study by the Center for Stategic International Studies, but the content still applies. It's a lengthy .pdf, but pretty comprehensive.
