what extent do you believe healthy fats taken w/ your shake slow protien absorption?

Now here is a good question. Although my opinions on protien shakes vs. whole foods as a protien source differ from some, lets face it, once in awhile we get in jams either due to time or convenience so we do a shake rather than food. Swolecat, I'd love for you to chime in on this question since your the big Nutrition guru around here. Do you feel that the protien absorption of whey is slowed down when consumed with a certain amount of healthy fats? My belief is a whole food meal about 2 1/2 hrs later tops, after a shake because of the absorption rate. Anybody who has an opinion on this, feel free. This topic interests me.

I believe that our body digests a meal as a whole..so yes, a whey isolate shake will take 40 mins to absorb on its own but maybe 2 or 3 times as long with stuff like peanut butter (both fiber and good fat) added to it...

Yeah !! most deff, absorbtion is slowed down IMO/Flax or All natty Pb are the best sources for the pro/fat, shake combo.

Flax will not slow the absorbtion of whey. That is completely false rumor. If you want slow digesting protein I suggest you eat a slow digesting source.

Hey SS, good question here. I cant tell you if it does or not. As you probably already know I am the same as you when it comes to shakes. I dont use them AT ALL. I eat whole food and ONLY whole food all day. I agree that life throws you some curve balls that cant be avoided and sometimes meals get delayed etc. But I am never completely without whole food. I wake up an extra hour earlier than it would take me to prepare for work and I cook and portion all of my meals out so I never have to worry about buying food at work or using shakes.

Anyways, back to the topic. My opinion on shakes has always been that they promote over-eating (or taking in more calories than you need). So whether fats slow it or not anytime I had a shake even with flax, I was hungry about 45 mins later. It was then very hard for me to hold off for another hr and a half before another meal.

Sorry I couldnt directly answer your question bro.

i know what you mean about being hungry after a shake! oh well, it's what i do and i'm willing to tolerate it for the time being and while i experiment and find what works best for me in accomplishing my goals.
i would have to say thought that i would think that with a plane shake alone that it would digest way faster and i'd be hungrier faster. efa's and/or fat alone provides 3x's the energy of carbs ie it would take 3 grams of fat to = 9g carbs

exactly, thats just the thing. I take in 2 scoops of whey w/ 2 tblspoons flax oil. Thats about 450 calories when mixed w/ water. I'm hungry 10 minutes later, REALLY HUNGRY!!! However, I eat 4 or 500 cals from chicken and almonds or chicken and rice and I'm good for a few hours. That was really the basis of my question really, if the stuff isnt pissed right out of you then why would it leave you so hungry? I was just curious, I'm dropping all shakes after the weekend anyways to help lose more weight, I believe they hold water like a bitch too. If anybody else has any facts on this or info feel free, thanks

Great question. I was taught in a nutrition class that fat DOES slow down digestion. I would assume that it would slow down absorption of protein, but perhaps absorption and digestion are entirely different? Giantz, you have any studies on this subject?

yeah, I've been living by the rule that I never do a shake alone, at least try not to. I'll usually have 1/4 lb of chicken, or maybe some tuna, and maybe just one scoop of whey w/ water to consume with it. But never alone, and I'm about to scratch it altogether as my show gets closer

johan had an article not too long ago about how taking in maybe a scoop of whey or even a half of a scoop of whey about 15 minutes before a normal meal high in protein (like all meals should be) would help flood the system with protein. i can't find it right now, but i don't have much time to look. if i find it later i'll post.

I have 3 shakes a day, so I've been doing it wrong all these years?

Again, find what works for you as an individual. I use shakes and I am in the best shape I've ever been currently, and have the pics to prove it. Most who preach "real food only" and parrot such claims don't even have pictures nor do they even look like they are into fitness.

I use them as replacements, yes, and have solid food a couple of hours after.

    Works for me.

sounds good.. does that mean you only have 3-4 solid food meals per day combined with 3 shakes per day?

Yea, thats my thought process too. But there are those moments where I'd rather have a Shake than no meal, especially when my boss suggests that its not fair for me to eat more often than the other employs... Which is nonsence, cause they snack their fatty chips alllll day long... Sorry little rant.

They make me feel bloated for about 30 min. After that i'm fine, but hungry.
