Protien is good for building. It may also help retain muscle if you are not getting enough naturally. I don't know what your bf% is, so 240 lbs doesnt mean so much to me if you are VERY muscular.
I am in a building phase right now so I am drinking lots of low carb protien shakes. When I cut, I cut down my protien intake. Since you are limiting carbs, you will naturally increase your protien intake, hence the shakes are not as important.
